Ty Cobb, who was a White House attorney during the administration of former President Donald Trump, suspects that the Justice Department’s investigation into whether Trump mishandled White House documents — some of them highly classified — is really about a broader investigation into possible crimes related to January 6th. , 2021, Capitol riot and efforts to overturn the 2020 election.

“It’s about the bigger picture, the January 6 issues, the false voters, the whole ‘big lie’ coup and the attempts to … desperately cling to the presidency,” Cobb said in this episode. week. from the podcast “The Takeout”.

One clue to Cobb, a former federal prosecutor, was the scope of the warrant authorized to search Trump’s Mar-a-Lago complex.

“The search warrant is extraordinarily large and broad,” Cobb told CBS Washington correspondent Major Garrett. “It’s very, very comprehensive in terms of the types of documents the government can take.”

“For example, you can take any box that has a document. You can take any box adjacent to a box that has it,” he said. “Those are pretty broad parameters.”

Cobb represented the White House during Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Trump’s suspected collusion with Russian entities in the run-up to the 2016 election. That investigation brought no charges against Trump.

Garrett asked Cobb about his experience in the White House watching Trump handle documents — routine or confidential.

“The president has been warned many times not to tear up documents,” Cobb said. “In my own experience, I must say, there was really nothing quite as consequential as the press reports I read. I saw him tear up newspaper articles that, unfortunately, some official would have to re-record in the I saw him tear up inconsequential documents, but never I saw him tear up a confidential document or something that was important.”

As for Trump’s legal future, Cobb said he doesn’t believe the investigation of the documents is the biggest threat.

“I think the president is in serious legal trouble, not so much because of the search, but because of the obstructive activity he did in relation to the January 6 lawsuit,” Cobb said. “I think that and the attempts to interfere with the election count in Georgia, Arizona, Pennsylvania and maybe Michigan. This was the first time in American history that a president unconstitutionally tried to remain in power illegally.”

Cobb says he thinks the possibility of an indictment against Trump is “very high”.

In response to a question about Trump’s attempts to deny the 2020 election result and overturn the results, Cobb, based on his extensive working relationship with Trump, said: “I believe that former President Trump is a deeply narcissist. injured, and he is often unable to act other than in his own self-interest or revenge,” said Cobb. “I think those are the two compelling instincts that guide his actions.”

Cobb also thinks Trump’s actions surrounding the January 6 attack on Capitol Hill could lead to him being barred from running for president again.

“There is a simple way to disqualify President Trump,” Cobb said. “He clearly violated the 14th Amendment to Article III of the Constitution when he provided aid and comfort and three hours of inaction regarding what was happening on Capitol grounds. This clearly helped and comforted the insurgents.”
