Why does CNN keep using Peter Strzok as an expert?

Pierre Strzok is a weird sight to see on cable news these days. He regularly appeared in interviews and on panels to discuss the FBI Raid on the former president that of Donald Trump Mar-a-Lago property and at first glance it seems logical to have him as a guest. After all, Strzok is a former FBI agent.

Strzok’s name, however, is not known to most for his service to the FBI, but rather for how it all fell apart. Trump’s vocal critic was fired from the FBI in 2018 after text messages between him and the former FBI lawyer Lisa Page came out (it should be noted that Strzok was embroiled in a lawsuit on his shot). As part of by Robert Muller nowhere an investigation into alleged collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia, Strzok was texting Page of embarrassing messages to prevent Trump from becoming president. In an exchange, he said they “will not allow” Trump to win the presidency.

This controversy is what makes Strzok’s appearances so bizarre – as he has primarily been tasked with discussing an investigation which itself is under scrutiny for alleged political bias. Whether one buys into this theory or not, it’s odd that Strzok is the expert or voice of reason on bias within the FBI and Justice Department.

No network seems to like having him on more than CNN, which has trotted out Strzok at least eight times in the past month.

During an appearance this week on CNN NewsroomStrzok pushed back against accusations of political bias against Trump and Republicans, calling them “nonsense.”

“First of all, over a year ago of an extraordinarily intrusive investigation into the former Secretary of State hillary clinton at the time, she was a candidate for President of the United States. So I don’t want to hear that this is some kind of one-sided Justice Department or FBI that only investigates Republicans. This is nonsense,” he said.

Whether he’s right or wrong isn’t really the issue here. Her words ring as hollow as Dick Cheney giving a MasterClass on Justified Wars.

CNN’s preference for Strzok’s “expertise” is particularly frightening given how many changes the network has been going through since coming under the new Warner Bros. umbrella. Discovery. Reports have suggested a motivation for moving to a political middle ground and big changes have taken place (CNN+ denied, by Brian Stelter Departure) with more to come, according to CEO Chris Licht.

Strzok is not someone who can ever speak authoritatively about FBI bias unless you agree with his policy. Strzok is making his feelings about Trump known far and wide (he’s one of about a million with a book on the former president), and that’s why his “expertise” only further arouses the suspicions of conservatives, especially those who are loyal to Trump. No conservative is going to flip on CNN and take what Strzok says without a truckload of salt.

Strzok shows no signs of going anywhere. He appeared Monday night on CNN Don Lemon tonight, and he also made numerous appearances on MSNBC where he rejected similar FBI defenses. These are defenses, however, that only play to one side, which is made worse by the fact that he is already discussing an issue where two sides are sinking.

Strzok has appeared on MSNBC at least six times this month, including one morning joe interview where he rejected the idea that the FBI “aims one way or the other”. Many of these guest spots, however, are with commentators open about their opposition to Trump. This network is also not one that sees major changes in its news coverage.

While he’s often billed as “the former head of counterintelligence” on CNN, Fox News covers him as a “disgraced FBI agent”, while outlets like National Review question why he is the man chosen to defend the “integrity” of the FBI.

Peter Strzok, it’s Thanksgiving leftovers frozen too long that keep getting reheated, but you just can’t get rid of the stench. If CNN and others want to defy accusations of bias and cover the Mar-a-Lago raid from a neutral stance with real expertise, turn to a guy let loose for alleged political bias against the guy who owns Mar- a-Lago is not a good look, and it never will be.
