All of his potential Democratic opponents say Mr. Van Orden is uniquely dangerous, but they take different tactics. Brad Pfaff, a Wisconsin state senator, emphasizes his accumulated experience in politics and claims Mr. Kind’s style of centrism. Her main rival, Deb McGrath, a former CIA officer and army captain, takes a more liberal and a more confrontational position against Mr. Van Orden, a veteran who she said “took the same oath as I did to protect and defend the Constitution,” but then traveled to Washington on Jan. 6.

Whoever wins the primary can expect a tough climb to keep the seat in the hands of the Democrats.

The death of Rep. Jim Hagedorn from cancer, a Republican, in February gave voters in his southern Minnesota district the chance to fill his seat just in time for the final big votes in an already tightly divided House. In another year, the seat could have been more competitive. After all, he was represented by Tim Walz, now the Democratic governor of Minnesota, before Mr Hagedorn was elected in 2018.

But the district leans Republican, and Brad Finstad, a farmer who served in the Department of Agriculture in the Trump administration, has the advantage over his Democratic opponent, Jeff Ettinger. Mr. Ettinger, the former chief executive of Hormel Foods, isn’t making it easy for Republicans: He poured $900,000 of his own money into the race. Mr. Finstad, who won his May primary by just 427 votes, must unite the GOP and vote in a state where the gubernatorial race does not have a competitive primary.

In a strange oddity, Republican voters in the district will vote twice, one to determine who will sit in the House until the end of the year, and another for a primary to choose the party’s nominee in November, when the district will choose its representative. for the next Congress.

A victory for Finstad in the special election would reduce Democrats’ margin of control in the House to just four votes. In the primary vote, Mr Finstad faces the man he narrowly beat in May, Jeremy Munson. This raises the intriguing possibility that Mr Finstad could win one race and lose another on the same day.
