After a total of 72 weeks of canceled programming since March 2020, including sporadic cancellations this spring, the Joyce Theater will present its annual 22-week fall season, with a renewed hope of performing every scheduled performance.

“We’ve had an entire year of opening and closing and opening and closing,” said Linda Shelton, Joyce’s general manager. “Every week we were like, ‘Are we going to get through the week?'”

The autumn-winter season, announced on Wednesday, will run from September to February and is expected to feature 18 companies, including the debut of LaTasha Barnes – familiar to the Chelsea scene as a dancer but new as a choreographer – with “The Jazz Continuum (Oct. 11-16), an intergenerational celebration of black dancers and musicians; Fouad Boussouf, whose choreography is inspired by contemporary dance, the hip-hop movement and the circus as well as the traditional dance of his native Morocco in “Näss” (18-23 Oct.); and the German contemporary company tanzmainz with “Soul Chain” by Sharon Eyal (24-28 Jan.).

The season opens with “Burn” (September 20-25), a solo dance-drama work by Olivier and Tony Award-winning actor Alan Cumming and Olivier-winning choreographer Steven Hoggett in a co-production with the National Theater of Scotland, Edinburgh International Festival, centered on the triumphs and troubles of Scottish poet Robert Burns.

Shelton said that recently, backstage at a show, Cumming said to her, “I still have a dance piece in me, are you up for it?” To which she replied: “Of course”.

Returning to the Joyce Theater this season, Camille A. Brown (twice nominated for the 2022 Tony Awards for her direction and choreography of “For girls of color who have thought about suicide / When the rainbow is insufficient”) with a trio of works redefining black identity, one of which is also an ode to the black girl (Oct. 25-30), and Ronald K. Brown and his company Evidence, with “The Equality of Night and Day” (January 17-22), which aims to challenge societal assumptions of fairness and justice.

From abroad, the Cuban group Malpaso Dance Company (October 4-9), in a 10th anniversary show, and the contemporary company Cullberg, from Sweden, with “Horse, the solos” (February 1-5), a new work by Deborah Hay.

For now, the theater, which reviews its Covid-19 policies weekly, will continue to require spectators to wear masks and provide proof of vaccinations.

“There’s so much desire to be on stage,” Shelton said. “We hear that all the companies can’t wait to be on stage again.”

“We don’t know what this coming year will bring,” she added, “but we’re going after it.”
