Dignified transfer for 13 soldiers killed at Kabul airport

Friday marks the one-year anniversary of 13 American servicemen who lost their lives near the Abbey Gate in Hamid Karzai International Airport (now Kabul International Airport).

Yet most mainstream media shows shamefully failed to mention, let alone cover, the first anniversary of the tragedy it was part of the larger tragic failure of the US withdrawal from Afghanistan.

Like my former colleague at the conservative watchdog Media Research Center, editor of NewsBusters Curtis Houcknoted on Twitter, CBS MatineesABC hello america and NBCs Today did not mention the suicide bombing that killed the US military.

Additionally, MSNBC morning joe did not cover the first anniversary.

This is hypocritical given that these shows covered the one-year anniversaries of other tragedies which, like the Kabul explosion, became political.

For instance, CBS Matinees‘predecessor, CBS this morningwhich ended on September 6, 2021, mentioned the first anniversary of the attack on the US consulate in Benghazi, Libya on September 11, 2012.

Additionally, all of the aforementioned shows commemorated the first anniversary of the May 25, 2020 death of george Floyda black man who was murdered when the Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin rested his left knee on Floyd’s neck for nine minutes and 29 seconds while Floyd was in police custody for allegedly using a counterfeit $20 bill.

Another example of such broadcasts commemorating the one-year anniversary of a tragedy is the 2017 Unite the Right march in Charlottesville, where far-right activists shouted anti-Semitic and other vile language such as “Jews don’t will not replace”.

There are many such examples. It is unusual to not mark something with such meaning.

The 13 U.S. service members who sacrificed their lives to help bring Americans and our Afghan and international allies and civilians to safety should have been commemorated and honored. Instead, it looks like they are set aside for partisan reasons.

Ultimately, there’s no excuse not to cover or even mention the anniversary of a major tragedy that affected the entire nation. One that was avoidable and for which there was no liability. NBC, CBS, ABC and MSNBC should be ashamed of this mistake.
