More than two million baby swings and swings were recalled on Monday for posing a strangulation hazard after one baby died and another was rescued from entanglement.

Restraint straps on MamaRoo swings and RockaRoo rockers hang below the seat when not in use, creating the possibility that crawling babies can get caught in them, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has declared.

The company behind the two models, 4moms, “has received two reports of entanglement incidents involving infants becoming entangled in the strap under the unoccupied MamaRoo infant swing after crawling under the seat, including a 10-month-old baby who died of asphyxiation, and a 10-month-old baby who suffered bruising to his neck before being rescued by a caregiver,” a safety commission statement said.

Gary Waters, chief executive of 4moms, said in an emailed statement that the company was “deeply saddened by both incidents” and remained committed to “the highest standards of quality and safety”.

Consumers with crawling babies have been advised to stop using the recalled products and keep them out of reach of children. The company offers consumers a free strap attachment that secures the straps when not in use to eliminate the safety issue, the company and the Product Safety Commission said.

“We take consumer feedback very seriously and work closely with our product development and engineering teams to continuously improve our line of baby products to meet the needs of our parents and their families,” 4moms spokesperson Amie Ley Stanton said in an email. .

Two million MamaRoo swings and 220,000 RockaRoo swings were sold in the United States, and an additional 60,000 MamaRoo swings and an additional 10,000 RockaRoo swings were sold in Canada. The MamaRoo is a swing with different motions, speeds and sounds, the safety commission said, while the RockaRoo is a seesaw with a back and forth sliding motion.

The recall affects MamaRoo products with three-point harnesses: versions 1.0 and 2.0 (model 4M-005), version 3.0 (model 1026) and version 4.0 (model 1037). The RockaRoo recall concerns model 4M-012.

Both product lines were sold at BuyBuy Baby and Target stores, as well as online at Amazon and on the 4moms website, the safety commission said. The rockers were sold between January 2010 and August 2022 for $160 to $250.

“We have also established relationships with external, independent, internationally accredited testing laboratories – specifically for the purpose of regularly testing our products throughout their life cycle,” Ms Stanton said.

The most recent MamaRoo swing (model 1046) was released in July and is not included in the recall, she said. The harness and webbing have been redesigned for its release.
