Fox's Kayleigh McEnany isn't waiting for the facts on Trump's raid

Fox News host Kayleigh McEnany called on the media on Friday to ‘wait for the facts to come out’ before speculating about the FBI’s raid on the former president that of Donald Trump Domain of Mar-a-Lago.

If only she practiced what she preached.

McEnany, who served in the Trump administration as a press secretary during its dark final days, has repeatedly and wildly speculated about the raid on Fox News, where she is now a host.

Fridays OutnumberedMcEnany criticized The Washington Post for reports that the classified documents Trump took with him to Mar-a-Lago included sensitive information about nuclear weapons. She called the story “evasive” and urged the media to be cautious about her claims.

“My point is, let’s wait for the facts to come out,” she said.

“There’s a story,” McEnany continued, “stories about anonymous sources that turn out to be untrue, so let’s wait for something called facts, which a lot of networks aren’t waiting for.”

Yet McEnany’s first on-air reaction to the raid completely ignored the facts.

Last Tuesday, the morning after the FBI searched Mar-a-Lago, McEnany boldly stated the United States a “banana republic”. (She then went even further, declaring that we were “beyond” banana republic status.)

This, mind you, was before we had any idea what the FBI was looking for when they executed a search warrant at the President’s resort.

The next day, McEnany echoed Trump’s claims that FBI agents screwed up the former First Lady Melanie of trump cupboard and entered his safe. Based on these comments from Trump, a notoriously unreliable narrator, McEnany insisted that the FBI was “cleaning up Melania’s closet, breaking in safes.”

She then launched the raid, which was ordered by the Attorney General Merrick Garland and approved by a Florida magistrate as a politically motivated attack.

“It’s like the full power of the federal government raining down on a political enemy,” McEnany said.

This week, McEnany again defied his Friday advice by accusing the FBI and DOJ of leaking details of the raid to the press.

[Marco] Rubio goes one step further, however, in making this point. He said an investigation into a prominent political figure is neither apolitical nor on the book if investigators leak sensationalized allegations to the media on a daily basis.

We saw this drip, drip, The Washington Post report on nuclear materials, New York Times report over the weekend on communications from the Trump team. Merrick Garland, the very first words out of Merrick Garland’s mouth on Thursday were “I will not communicate through leaks”. So I’m hoping that the same way they’re looking for the leaker in the Supreme Court, they’re looking for the leaker in the DOJ and the FBI because if you want to further undermine the trust of half the country, keep it drip, drip leaks.

First of all, McEnany has no idea if the allegations reported by The Washington Post and The New York Times are “sensationalized”. These facts remain unknown, like almost everything she has spoken about in the past week. Second, she made the baseless assumption that the leaks came from law enforcement and not the Trump team or other sources.

McEnany is not alone on Fox News in baseless speculation about the raid before knowing all the facts. The Justice Department’s investigation is still ongoing and we won’t really know its full extent for some time.

McEnany and his fellow Trump boosters would be wise to proceed with caution – especially in light of reports that Trump’s allies are telling top Republicans not to criticize the DOJ and FBI because “more damaging research-related information may become public.”

It can be difficult for pundits — especially those as partisan as McEnany — to hold their fire and wait for all the facts before declaring the end of the republic. But they should at least try.
