Former president donald trump insisted that he be immediately reinstated as president or a new election is called. His reasoning? A Mark Zuckerberg interview in which the Facebook founder reiterated his previous claim that the FBI warned him of a potential Russian fake news spill weeks before the 2020 general election that Trump lost to the president Joe Biden.

Yes, the former president really demanded that he be reinstated as president 664 days after losing the election. By any objective measure, that’s insane. Damn crazy.

trump first made the weird request on his fledgling social media platform Monday at noon, then “re-truthhis comments around 2 a.m. Tuesday:

However, it is unclear which judicial body Trump is addressing here. He seems to think there is a magical branch of government that restores defeated candidates to power if they complain loud enough.

It’s unclear if Trump is joking or if he’s become so detached from reality that he actually believes it’s doable. The disorderly delusions – they have increased in frequency since the raid on his Mar-a-Lago resort – are likely evidence of someone under a great deal of stress, which, given the criminal investigation he is facing currently facing, is certainly understandable.

And yet, despite the jaw-dropping insanity of his latest claim, the vast majority of the conservative media choose to ignore the former president’s insanity: For the past 20 hours, Trump’s claims have gone unmentioned. only once on Fox News.

Which is nothing.

Trump is still widely seen as the presumptive leader of the Republican Party. His endorsements in the GOP primaries ahead of the midterm elections were GOLD for Republicans in the running. And he is currently the favorite to win the Republican nomination for a White House bid in 2024.

Is that why his allies in the conservative media continue to look the other way? How bad do things have to get before they pump out the Trump train breaks?

The more charitable view would be that, like anyone who has lived with or cared for an elderly family member in mental decline, Fox’s hosts grant this elderly statesman grace, patience and understanding. Trump, confined to Truth Social, is like an elderly member of the family who frequently passes gas at the table — best left unheard if you want to finish your meal without a fuss.

But the more likely explanation is that the conservative media – by their own definition – are not news outlets, at least as we have traditionally understood them. Traditional standards of journalism state that bias should not interfere with objective reporting. It’s a quaint understanding of journalism from years ago, and our current political infotainment ecosystem leaves little room for the concept.

It is a clear perversion of the parable of “the emperor has no clothes”, where a media deliberately participates in the ruse.

The conservative media choose to ignore Trump’s wild ramblings because they are afraid of offending an audience of viewers who actually believe Trump’s claims might be valid. It is the tail that wags the dog. It is the profit rather than the principle. This is such a clear illustration of the “idiocracy” we have right now.

Again, Trump is calling for immediate reinstatement as president. It’s so clearly stupid. And yet, the conservative media are once again giving him a pass.
