In the days after federal agents raided former President Donald J. Trump’s Florida home last week, he posted dozens of posts on Truth Social, his social media platform, about Democrats. , the FBI and other suspected enemies.

These statements reflect Mr. Trump’s strategy been using for a long time to address the controversy, alternately denying any wrongdoing while directing attention elsewhere. Some of the messages also reflect his penchant for false and misleading claims.

Here are some of the false and unsubstantiated statements he has made since the FBI raid.

Monday and Tuesday August 8 and 9

In the days following the raid, Mr. Trump’s allies focused attention on the FBI search warrant for his home at the Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach. These mandates generally remain under seal unless charges are filed, but many of his supporters suggested that the FBI was not releasing it because the research was politically motivated.

Mr. Trump was free to release the warrant at any time. Instead, he repeatedly linked the White House to the research, suggesting President Biden or other Democrats knew about it.

“Biden knew all about it,” he wrote Aug. 9. He provided no evidence.

Karine Jean-Pierre, White House press secretary, said President Biden was not given prior notice of research.

Wednesday August 10

Mr Trump said his lawyers and others at Mar-a-Lago were not allowed to watch the search and suggested the lack of oversight could have allowed the FBI to file evidence.

He wrote on Truth Social that officers didn’t want witnesses “to see what they were doing, taking, or hopefully not ‘planting’.”

But Mr. Trump’s lawyer said during a television interview that the former president watched the raid from New York from video provided by security cameras inside Mar-a-Lago.

Mr Trump also targeted former President Barack Obama, falsely claiming his predecessor brought more than 30 million documents to Chicago after he left the White House. In a later article, Mr. Trump raised the figure to 33 million documents.

The National Archives and Records Administration, or NARA, responded in a statementstating that “NARA has moved approximately 30 million pages of unclassified records to a NARA facility in the Chicago area, where they are retained exclusively by NARA.”

Thursday August 11

After reports showed the FBI was looking for documents related to “special access programs”, a term reserved for extremely sensitive operations and tightly held technologies, Mr. Trump said the FBI could have requested documents without a raid.

He posted on Truth Social that the FBI had previously asked him to install an additional padlock in an area where secure documents were kept.

“My lawyers and representatives were cooperating fully and a very good relationship had been established,” he wrote on August 11. “The government could have had anything it wanted, if we had had it.”

Mr. Trump received a summons this spring seeking additional documents, and federal officials met with Mr. Trump and his attorney Evan Corcoran at Mar-a-Lago. After the visit, at least one of Mr. Trump’s lawyers signed a written statement claiming that all material marked as classified and stored in boxes at Mar-a-Lago has been returned.

But one hardware inventory taken from Mr Trump’s home during the search last week showed that officers had seized 11 sets of confidential or secret documents.

Friday August 12

After the warrant was issued by a Florida court, an accompanying log showed that 11 sets of classified documents had been recovered from Mar-a-Lago. The warrant also showed that the investigation was related to violations of the Espionage Act.

Mr. Trump then implied that the documents seized by the FBI were legitimate.

“Number one, everything has been declassified,” he wrote.

While presidents have broad powers to declassify information while in office, violations of the Espionage Act still apply to declassified documents.

Saturday and Sunday August 13 and 14

In a series of posts on Truth Social, Mr Trump doubled down on his criticism of the FBI, saying the agency “has a long and unrelenting history of corruption”. He listed discredited allegations of election interference in the 2016 election.

Mr Trump then backtracked on his earlier, unsubstantiated claims that the documents may have been concealed by the FBI.

“There was no way of knowing if what they took was legit, or if there was a ‘plant’?” he wrote. “It was, after all, the FBI!”
