Jim Harbaugh, the head football coach at the University of Michigan, professed his anti-abortion views at a fundraising event this week, becoming one of the first high-profile sports figures to sing. speak out against abortion since the overturning of Roe v. Wade.

“I believe in having the courage to let the unborn child be born,” Harbaugh said at the event, according to the Detroit Catholic, an information service for the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Detroit. “I love life. I believe in having loving care and respect for life and death. My faith and my science is what drives these beliefs in me.

Harbaugh and his wife, Sarah, were speaking at a Plymouth Right to Life event in Plymouth, Michigan, on Sunday, according to the organization’s website. A priest from the archdiocese gave a keynote speech titled “We were made to be brave” before the Harbaughs gave what the group called a “pro-life testimonial”.

Harbaugh, who is Catholic and quoted a Bible verse during his remarks, said he has faith in the American public to develop the right abortion policies and laws.

“Yes, there are conflicts between the legitimate rights of the mother and the rights of the unborn child,” he said. “A resolution could involve incredible difficulties for the mother, the family and society. Another results in the death of an unborn person.

After the Supreme Court struck down the constitutional right to abortion last month, several prominent athletes, including soccer star Megan Rapinoe, criticized the decision. Until Harbaugh’s speech this week, few sports figures had spoken publicly against abortion.

Harbaugh’s opinion goes against what University of Michigan interim president Mary Sue Coleman said after the Supreme Court overruled Roe v. Wade. On the day of this decision, she says“I strongly support access to abortion services, and I will do everything in my power as president to ensure that we continue to provide this critically important care.”

Abortion is currently legal in Michigan but is being challenged in court, with a judge blocking the application of a 1931 law which prohibits most abortions from taking effect. Governor Gretchen Whitmer, a Democrat, sued to end the ban.

Harbaugh declined an interview through a spokesperson for the University of Michigan football team. Rick Fitzgerald, a spokesperson for the university, said: “Jim Harbaugh attended an event and shared his personal views as any citizen has a constitutional right to do. He shared his personal beliefs and did not speak to the name of the university.

As news of Harbaugh’s remarks spread, Michigan reporters and alumni discussed it online, sometimes heatedly.

Jemele Hill, a writer for The Atlantic who worked for ESPN and is from Detroit, criticized the views presented by Harbaugh. “That might be a difficult concept for Jim Harbaugh” or “any anti-choice person” to grasp. she wrote on Twitter, “but if you don’t want an abortion, don’t have one. Not so difficult.

Clay Travis, who founded sports and culture website Outkick, said it was inconsistent for reporters to complain after Harbaugh presented his views.

“The same sports media that always says, ‘Hey, we want everyone to share their political beliefs, speak up as much as you want’, is going to absolutely tear Jim Harbaugh up because he has a different opinion than theirs on abortion.” Travis said in a video posted on Twitter.

Harbaugh coached at Michigan for seven seasons after flipping the football program at Stanford and leading the San Francisco 49ers to a Super Bowl appearance. He quarterbacked in the NFL for 14 years before becoming a coach and wasn’t shy about speaking his mind.

After George Floyd was murdered by a Minneapolis police officer, Harbaugh entered a rally against police brutality held in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He previously coached Colin Kaepernick, the 49ers quarterback who became the center of a firestorm when he stopped performing at the national anthem to protest what Kaepernick called “a country that oppresses black people and people of color.” Harbaugh then says that he supported Kaepernick’s motivation but opposed his course of action.

According to Detroit Catholic, the priest at the anti-abortion event in Plymouth, Reverend John Riccardo, said he hoped there were people in the audience who supported abortion rights but were attended due to Harbaugh’s presence.

“I want you to know that you are welcome here,” said the priest, michigan graduate. “We are so glad you came and just want to ask God to help us see reality.”
