Over the past few weeks, the Daily Wire’s rage machine has kicked into high gear as hosts like Matt Walsh, Candace Owensand even founder Ben Shapiro Drop the culture war screeds promoting a civil war, encouraging the government to take children away from people, and coldly portraying trans suicide rates as just a fact.

While there is no doubt that the debate around trans rights is stirring strong emotions on both sides, the issue continues to gain traction on the right and animate the grassroots. Hosts and pundits now appear to be in a race to see who can be more extreme on the issue, as the rhetoric of trans critics has undeniably reached new levels of hostility – moving the debate away from political discussion for attacks. direct attacks on the trans community.

Walsh, who denounced a Fox News segment about a trans teenager and his family as “evil madness,” made it clear he can’t live with the other side’s point of view, with rhetoric that only serves to stoke the flames of hatred in a country already deeply divided.

“I don’t respect them. I have nothing in common with them. I hate everything they believe in and stand for,” Walsh wrote on Twitter last week, reacting to the House abortion hearings.

“They feel the same about me. We just can’t go on like this,” he concluded ominously.

About an hour before this little schismatic political pundit, Walsh wrote: “We are [sic] nation divided over the existence of pregnant men. The coming civil war will certainly be the strangest in history.

Walsh, who has more than a million Twitter followers, has made a name for herself online by focusing her anger on the trans and LGBTQ community, drag queens and women who would dare to use terms like “girl boss.” . Walsh, who is regularly portrayed as a troll, had a speech canceled in December 2021 by a Catholic church in Missouri about his “defiant stances on immigration, communities of color, Muslims, and members of the LGBTQ community seemed designed to stir up anger and resentment, rather than encourage thoughtful dialogue.

“His statements contradict Jesus’ great commandment to love God and to love our neighbour,” concluded St. Francis Xavier College Church.

He writes in his bio on Twitter that he is a “theocratic fascist”, which he later claims is not a joke and it is an etiquette he is clearly trying to live up to in his commentary.

Walsh, who has also published a children’s book and released a documentary disparaging the trans community, has a daily podcast on the Daily Wire – once a fairly mainstream conservative news aggregation site that was regularly the best editor on facebook.

The success of the Daily Wire on Facebook is unprecedented in the media and it is one of the reasons why the company claims to have generated over $100 million in revenue in 2021.

In June, however, the engagement soaked and the publisher fell to the 5th most engaged site on Facebook. Whether the culture war rhetoric dividing Firebrand hosts helps or hurts the publisher remains to be seen. Either way, the Daily Wire has gone all out to target the trans community and Walsh isn’t the only host to do so. Candace Owens recently used her weekly show to focus on many of the same themes as Walsh and promote a deeply illiberal version of social conservatism.

In early June, she released an episode called “Why Everyone Hates Pride Month” and argued that parents should have their children taken away for attending events with drag queens.

“And you see right now that adults are buying into that narrative so they can wear a woke t-shirt and say I love my kids. I allowed my kid to choose their gender and choose their species,” said Owens, who started his show by saying Pride month should be called “shame month.”

“And they feel proud of themselves because they can go there and they can say this on Facebook that they are wonderful, tolerant and loving adults,” Owens continued, mocking the parents of whom one can only imagine that they often go through a difficult journey when it comes to having a trans child.

“When in reality they’re not qualified to have children,” she continued, adding, “They should have their children taken away because it’s abuse.”

So, there you have it, Owens calling on the government to hurt families in one of the deepest ways possible — not to mention the impact on children forced into government-run foster homes. His argument is a full-fledged endorsement of using government to punish ideological enemies and raise their children with the values endorsed by Owens — parents’ rights be damned.

In another Daily Wire podcast, Shapiro took aim at the argument that the trans community should be supported given the high rate of teen suicide. Here is what Shapiro said:

The general point that the left is trying to make is that if you say a man is a man and a woman is a woman, a group of people who believe they are members of the opposite sex will be so put off by the fact that the biological reality exists and that you say it, not even that it exists, that you say it. They are going to commit suicide. There is only one problem with this line of argument. This is complete nonsense.

While making no mention of the bullying of trans kids and glossing over the statistics, which show that around 40% of trans or non-binary teens have attempted suicide, Shapiro goes on to say that acceptance does is not the answer.

Shapiro maintains that in highly tolerant areas, the rate does not decrease. “There is no statistical evidence to suggest that the wildly disparate rate of suicidal ideation among LGBT people suddenly corrects itself to match the norm, i.e. people who know what gender they are,” he says.

There is data showing that in recent years, LGBT suicide rates have gone down in the United States because visibility has increased and the country has become more open about the subject.

Although, according to a 2020 study, looking at data from 2009 and 2017, LGBT youth are still three times more likely to attempt suicide than their peers.

“Truth matters in a society. If some people are unable to handle the truth and it makes them more mentally ill or more suicidal, it’s not the truth’s fault,” Shapiro concluded on the matter.

“We are going to have to find different solutions,” he added.

The point of Shapiro’s argument, while clearly lacking empathy for the individuals and families impacted by the high suicide rate among trans teens, is pretty clear. He wants to suppress a strong argument from the other side and pretend it’s a red herring. Although the idea that speech has no power is quite rich coming from a talking head that uses words to stifle empathy for another group of people.

Agree with him or not, this kind of argument is pretty typical in the media. But what is Matt Walsh’s endgame? Or Candace Owens on this issue?

Walsh “low-key shopping a civil war,” as Molly Jong Fast put he, on pronouns and declaring absolute intolerance for the other side’s view on abortion, one of the few issues where there is actually a popular common ground in this country, seems to just spit hate for hate’s sake – or just to get more Twitter followers.

Public views on trans rights are pretty well established at this point. It’s not a new issue facing the country, and from bathrooms to college sports and now schools, it’s something that’s been fought over for more than a decade.

Walsh and Owens have both stepped up the level of rhetoric surrounding the issue, however. Especially for a big, influential news source like the Daily Wire, which, with the recent hiring of Jordan Peterson, who happily dead named a famous trans actor, only seems to double down on that approach.

Peterson has gone so far recently to to suggest that the Russian invasion of Ukraine was fueled by the “degenerate” West and the culture war over these sorts of issues.

What exactly is the purpose of this kind of rhetoric? What is Peterson’s endgame in making such a ridiculous argument, an argument that even Vladimir Poutine would certainly laugh? It’s hard to say without knowing him – although there are plenty of possibilities to speculate on.

But, it is clear that this kind of rhetoric and hatred is swelling in the country and that the far right is linking it to justifications for illiberal policies and the deprivation of individual freedoms. Pensacola, Florida school board candidate Wednesday said doctors who treat trans children should be “hanging from the nearest tree” – she was quickly applauded.

Trans rights are a complex issue for many people, especially in the context of education and children. However, the trans community remains one of the most vulnerable groups of people in our society with violence on the rise, and no matter how badly Walsh wants them, they’re not just going to disappear. His rhetoric represents a race to the bottom in terms of fiery hate, division and could lead to more real violence – none of which can be worth the clicks and followers on Twitter.
