Glenn Kessler Rightly Gets Kicked All Over Twitter – By AOC and Others – For

Washington Post fact checker Glenn Kesler got kicked all over twitter by people like a congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on her “fact check” of the now-confirmed story of a 10-year-old girl who sought abortion care after being raped. He didn’t get kicked enough, in my opinion.

Two weeks ago, Dr. Caitlin Bernard Told Shari Rudavsky and Rachel Fradette of The Indianapolis Star that a 10-year-old pregnant girl – referred by a doctor specializing in child abuse – was among a group of patients seeking abortions in states that banned the procedure following the 5- 4 of the Supreme Court in Dobbs vs. Jackson women’s health organizationwho actually knocked down Roe vs. Wade.

Much has been made of the fact that Fox News personalities and other preservatives either outright called the story “fake” or otherwise doubted – a ruckus that came to a head after the president Joe Biden refers to the story of Dr. Bernard in a speech, and said, “Does anyone believe it is the overwhelming majority opinion that this should not be able to be dealt with, or in any other state in the country? A 10-year-old girl should be forced to give birth to a rapist’s child? I can tell you what: I don’t know. I can’t imagine anything more extreme.

Now that the news broke that a man confessed to the rape in question, these outlets and personalities did not issue an apology, instead devoting themselves to finding creative ways double.

And then there’s Kessler, who published a “Fact-Checker” column who have unfairly cast doubt on history. Without going into a thorough fisking of the column, the simple premise of it was fatally flawed.

Titled “A single-source story about a 10-year-old child and an abortion goes viral,” the article repeatedly and forcefully creates the impression that the journalism in the original story was lacking, without providing responsible contextual analysis. It wasn’t just one anonymous, unattributed source, it was a doctor who had been on record and — importantly, and never reported by Kessler — literally given all the information federal law would allow.

With no actual evidence of deception, the story was as solid as it could have been. Given the arduous nature of interviewing women and girls who were sexually assaulted, Kessler’s editors probably should have insisted that he meet the burden of proof that the story might be false even before publishing an article that ended up justifying the doubt. Instead, he became the basis of a campaign to discredit the story.

Since news of the rapist’s confession broke, Kessler has defended himself on Twitter – while telling Twitter users he doesn’t care what they say.

“The last line of this fact-check was, ‘If ever a rapist is charged, the fact would eventually have a stronger basis. “Now a rapist has been charged and the story has been updated. I get a lot of angry emails, but journalism is an accumulation of facts,” Kessler wrote, then added, “And for info, for over a year I’ve had a policy of not reading notifications. It’s made life on this toxic platform so much easier. So if you yell at @GlennKesslerWP, I don’t hear it No. I do, however, respond to thoughtful or provocative emails.

AOC was one of many blue checks—myself included—that didn’t buy what Kessler sold. You can take this as an endorsement of these feelings:

As a journalist, Kessler has a duty of truth that includes avoiding harm by subjecting the truth to unreasonable tests — and casting unreasonable doubt on it in the process.
