Politico took a strange deep dive at the president’s grave Joe Bidenfire the son Handsome Biden which included photos of things left behind by mourners – a stunning but characteristic intrusion into grief.

Anyone who has paid attention to the President knows that he was and continues to be deeply affected by the life and death of his son. President Biden talk frequently on Beau’s memory and inspiration he shoots his son in raw emotional terms.

It’s a facet of Joe Biden’s life that his opponents have ignorantly tried to weaponize – and which the political media treated with all the sensibility of a burlap Q-Tip.

They oddly grilled Jen Psaki constantly on the president’s frequent visits to his home in Delaware 90 miles away, where Beau’s grave — and those of his late first wife Neilia and baby daughter Naomi — are seated.

The Washington Postit is Annie Linkey tweeted a photo of Biden visiting his family’s graves with the caption ‘Biden goes to church and walks through a cemetery in Wilmington as his legislative agenda dies in Washington’ – deleting it after being dragged. Linskey invited another dragging when she and her newspaper teamed up to portray Biden as some kind of drug addict who gets slammed for spending too much time at funerals.

It’s in that fine tradition that Politico’s West Wing Playbook celebrated Memorial Day this week with their spread on the memories family and other mourners leave at Beau’s grave.

The signing for the article – titled “Things They Leave for Beau” – was written by Alex Thompson and completed with a series of tweets.

The opening paragraphs of the article provide a comprehensive inventory of items left at the site, including:

  • flowers and american flags
  • souvenirs and emblems with a personal or even spiritual connection to the sacred grounds”
  • New York’s “I voted early” wristband
  • An undamaged letter, wrapped in plastic and addressed to “President-elect Biden and Dr. Biden.”
  • a United States Olympics pin
  • a black squash ball
  • a US Army Deputy Chief of Chaplains medal from the National Guard.
  • a Christmas angel statue with the inscription “Peace & Love”
  • a St. Patrick’s Day shamrock wreath
  • “happy birthday” confetti.
  • rosary
  • dozens of visiting stones
  • People also leave a lot of change – a tradition for the military. A penny for a visit; a penny if they trained together at boot camp; a penny for people who have served together in some capacity; and a quarter if the person was present when that veteran died, according to the Department of Military Affairs.
  • There are several neighborhoods. One has a tails side showing Washington crossing the Delaware. A more recent addition to the site includes a coin with the presidential seal.
  • And of course, there’s a dark blue rubber strap that says, “WWBD” or “What would Beau Do?”

The piece also features several photos of the items left at the grave, in case the list isn’t enough.

Unlike some of his colleagues, Thompson’s intentions here seem good. The remainder of the article consists of detailed information on President Biden’s public expressions of grief and affection for Beau, and interviews with mourners for whom Beau’s life and death left a mark. indelible.

This begs the question: why not make it the focus of the story, instead of tying it to the macabre and intrusive exercise Thompson went with? It’s the same question that plagued this WaPo article about Biden’s attendance at the funeral, which was a mostly positive piece marred by a few insensitive paragraphs and a terrible tweet.

I could hazard a guess. The political press has long been plagued by a delusional phobia of conservatives accusing them of being soft on Democrats, which has accelerated after four years of Trump. With that phobia comes a palpable pressure to never be seen saying anything nice about Biden — especially at insider outlets like Politico, which have ostensibly complains about their lack of access.

So, as well-meaning as Thompson is, it probably never occurred to him that he could get Politico to release something with a premise and title that reflects those intentions.

This is an opinion piece. The opinions expressed in this article are the sole responsibility of the author.
