WASHINGTON — Actor Matthew McConaughey, a native son of Uvalde, Texas, took the pulpit in the White House briefing room on Tuesday and spoke of being taught as a child “to revere power and capacity” of a firearm. He then recounted the horror he felt losing 19 schoolchildren in his hometown to a man with a gun so powerful it disfigured many of their bodies beyond recognition.

Fresh out of a meeting with President Biden, McConaughey echoed the president’s call for thorough background checks on gun buyers, new ‘red flag’ laws and restrictions over the purchase of AR-15 rifles like the one used to kill 19 children and two teachers at a primary school in Uvalde last month. He presented himself as the voice of responsible gun owners and described, in graphic detail, the horrors of gun violence.

‘Children were left not just dead, but hollow,’ Mr McConaughey said, describing his encounter with the parents of children killed in Uvalde whose bodies had been ‘mutilated so much that only DNA tests’ or Converse sneakers green could be used to identify them.

“Yes, we will need advisers in Uvalde for a long time,” he said.

The shoot is one of the deadliest attacks at school on file and a over 200 mass shootings registered in the United States so far this year. Barely 10 days before the Uvalde shooting, a gunman shot dead 10 people at a Buffalo grocery store.

Mr McConaughey’s appearance at the White House came as a bipartisan group of senators attempt to negotiate new legislation to address gun violence. Senators involved in the talks expressed mixed optimism that some sort of legislation could be produced that could unclog the equally divided chamber, though they were certain it would miss some measures, like a gun ban. assault, which Mr. Biden has called for.

McConaughey, who also met with lawmakers on Capitol Hill on Tuesday, said he and his wife, Camilla, traveled to Uvalde the day after the shooting.

“You could feel the shock in the city,” he said. “You could feel pain, denial, disillusionment, anger, blame, sadness. Lives lost, dreams come to an end.

He choked up talking about his meeting with the parents of Alithia Ramirez, 10 years old, who dreamed of going to art school in Paris, and how Alithia’s father, Ryan, had recently gotten a better-paying job, promising it meant he’d spoil her by taking her to Sea World.

Mr McConaughey asked his wife to hold the green Converse high-top trainers worn every day by a 10-year-old child Maite Rodriguez, who hoped to one day study to become a marine biologist, and who had drawn a heart on his right toe to symbolize his love of nature. “It was the same green Converse on his feet,” Mr. McConaughey said, “that turned out to be the only clear evidence that could identify him after the shooting.”

He knocked on the desk. ” And that ? »

He also described meeting a cosmetologist experienced in applying mortuary makeup for open casket viewings. “These bodies were very different,” McConaughey said. “They needed a lot more than makeup to look presentable. They needed a major restoration. Why? Because of the unusually large exit wounds from an AR-15 rifle.

After a few minutes, Mr. McConaughey turned to politics. He called on the media to reduce their sensational coverage of the mass shootings. He repeatedly cited the need for “responsible gun ownership,” including new regulations Democrats have imposed in response to the shootings.

“We need to raise the minimum age to buy an AR-15 rifle to 21,” he said. “We need a waiting period for these guns. We need red flag laws and consequences for those who abuse them. These are reasonable, practical and tactical regulations.

Mr McConaughey, the star of films such as ‘Dazed and Confused’ and ‘Dallas Buyers Club’ and the TV series ‘True Detective’, considered running for governor of Texas last year, but the excluded in Novembercalling politics “a path I choose not to take at this time”.
