The opening hearing of the House committee investigating the January 6 attack on the United States Capitol made it clear why Fox News split from every other major news network by refusing broadcast the audience during prime time.

This was so the network could continue to mislead its viewers about what happened on January 6, 2021.

ABC, NBC, CBS, PBS, CNN and MSNBC broadcast the entire two-hour hearing live. Fox News didn’t, pushing its anchors Bret Bayer and Martha MacCallum at Fox Business, while its opinion leaders aired counter-programming laden with misrepresentations and conspiracy theories about the riot.

The hearing began at 8 p.m., at the start of At Tucker Carlson Fox News broadcast. Carlson continued to downplay the bloody riot on his show, as he has for more than a year, calling it “a forgetfully minor outbreak of violence” and “not even close to an insurrection.”

Darren Beattiea former Trump administration staffer who spread Jan. 6 conspiracy theories appeared on Carlson’s show to claim that “federal authorities” were involved in the attack.

“It’s a clear hoax,” Beattie said. “We know what happened, but there are unfinished business and we need to expose the federal authorities for what they have done.”

Meanwhile, the committee released footage showing the extent of the violence that day. A horde of Trump supporters beat police with pipes and bats, overwhelmed them and eventually broke into the Capitol. Footage showed staff members in by Kevin McCarthy runaway office. A rioter read Trump’s tweet attacking the vice president Mike Pence over a megaphone to a crowd, who responded by chanting “hang up Mike Pence.”

Capitol Police Officer Caroline Edwardswho lost consciousness while being trampled on by rioters, describes the scene as a “war zone”:

It was something like I had seen in the movies. I couldn’t believe my eyes. There were officers on the ground, they were bleeding, they were vomiting, they were, they had, I mean, I saw friends with blood on their faces. I slipped into people’s blood. I was catching people, as they were falling, I was — it was carnage. It was chaos.

Edwards also described the officer Brian Sicknickdied the day after the attack, looking “ghostly pale” after being pepper sprayed by the crowd.

Of course, Fox News wasn’t going to air that. It would spoil much of their commentary from last year by pretending the riot didn’t happen.

Fox News hosts were also directly named in the hearings. Texts between Sean Hannity and Kayleigh McEnany (then press secretary, now Fox News host) showed that even opinion voices on the network were well aware of the seriousness of the riot.

“No more stolen campaign speeches,” Hannity emailed McEnany on Jan. 7. “Yes, impeachment and the 25th Amendment are real, and a lot of people will quit.”

McEnany replied, “Love it. Thanks. It’s the playbook. I’ll help reinforce.

Head of Committee Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) argued that the texts proved that Trump White House officials knew the president was not telling the truth about the election and that those lies fueled the riot.

“White House staff knew President Trump was prepared to entertain and use conspiracy theories to get his way,” Cheney said. “They knew the president needed to be cut off from everyone who had cheered him on. They knew President Donald Trump was too dangerous to be left alone.

On her show, Hannity concluded ratings: “The only person who looks good is Donald Trump.” The same Trump who was supposed to have said on January 6 that Pence “deserves” to be hanged. The same Trump who tried to stay in power despite losing an election and was repeatedly told by his own officials that he lost that election.

Primetime Fox News will undoubtedly continue to ignore ratings at best and spread false information about the attack at worst.

It’s self-preservation: On Monday, the former Fox News editor Chris Stirewaltwho was fired for mocking Trump’s claims of a stolen election and has since argued the network is responsible for fueling the riot, will testify.
