“One hack I would love to have is carpooling,” Alexa Lopez said. But she couldn’t find any viable options near her home in Kissimmee, Florida. She has a long commute: 81km a day between her home and her job at a plumbing company in Melbourne. So to save money on gas, she cut back on extracurricular driving, as well as some more essential activities.

Ms Lopez, 30, used to walk to the grocery store without thinking twice. Now, because of inflation and high prices to get to the store, she only goes there every two weeks. Previously, she says, she would buy “anything and everything”, including snacks like crisps for her son. But, she says, “I can’t really buy too much anymore.”

She added, “I feel pretty much like the average American right now: struggling.”

For the first time in years, some who were doing relatively well are facing tough trade-offs. As the war in Ukraine and the pandemic continue to rock the economy, concerns Are growing that the US economy could be on the verge of recession. People move to make it easier to get around. Family visits are kept to a minimum. Future savings are funneled into soaring grocery prices. It was a hard jolt.

Elizabeth Hjelvik, 26, a graduate student in materials science at the University of Colorado at Boulder, watches her budget closely. She recently started cycling on campus. She also started working from home more often, using her parents’ Kroger fuel points to fill up her 2005 Honda and cutting back on spontaneous weekend trips.

Ms Hjelvik remembers saying, as she and her partner recently returned from a trip to Fort Collins, Colorado, about 50 miles away, “This ride is so beautiful, but maybe it’s something something that we will not be able to do in the future.” Her family lives in New Mexico, a short drive from Boulder.“Ideally, we could go see them more often, but that’s a lot of gas,” she says.

Kaitlyn Thomas, 25, a medical resident living in Horseheads, NY, said she sometimes Googles gas prices in neighboring Pennsylvania. She also has a note running on her phone where she follows what is announced at the stations she passes during her journey. Next week, she’s moving to Sayre, Pennsylvania to live within walking distance of work.
