“Dear Evan Hansen” and “Tina,” two Broadway musicals that sold strongly before the coronavirus pandemic but never recovered after the theater’s long shutdown, both announced on Tuesday that they would close late this summer.

‘Dear Evan Hansen,’ a heartbreaking musical about a clumsy teenager who tells a terrible lie, will end its Broadway run on September 18, five years after winning the Tony Award for Best New Musical.

The show opened to huge acclaim and was a major hit, but it suffered a double whammy from the coronavirus pandemic and a poorly received film adaptation, and has been limp at the box office in recent months.

“Tina”, a musical jukebox on the life and career of the founding rocker Tina Turnerwill end its broadcast on August 14.

Both shows will continue to play outside of New York. “Dear Evan Hansen” wraps up its London production in October, but a North American tour sold well and is continuing. “Tina” will embark on a North American tour in September and will also take place in Great Britain, Germany, Spain and the Netherlands.

Dear Evan Hansenbegan its Broadway run on November 14, 2016 and opened on December 4, 2016. By the time it closes, it will have played 21 preview performances and 1,678 regular performances.

The musical, produced by Stacey Mindich and directed by Michael Greif, began life at Arena Stage in Washington, then had an Off Broadway tour at Second Stage before moving to Broadway. He won six Tony Awards, notably for the score of Benj Pasek and Justin PaulSteven Levenson’s book, and two of his interpreters: Ben Plattwho played the title character, and Rachel Bay Jones, who played her mother.

Not only did the show win Best Musical Tony, but the London production won the Olivier Award for Best New Musical and the cast album won a Grammy.

The show, which has long recouped its capital costs and become profitable, was regularly grossing more than $1 million a week before Broadway closed in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic. In 2021, a movie adaptation was published and was the subject of significant online derision; it’s unclear how this affected the stage version, but receipts have been shaky and slippery since performances of the show resumed last December. The show earned $508,455 in the week ending June 5.

Tina”, with music from the singer’s catalog and a book by Katori Hall, began life in London and then transferred to Broadway, starting previews on October 12, 2019 and opening on November 7, 2019. The musical, produced by Stage Entertainment, which is a major European production company, is directed by Phyllida Lloyd; it won a Tony Award, for its lead actress, Adrian Warren.

“Tina,” which has a much larger cast and more elaborate physical production than “Dear Evan Hansen,” which means it costs more to run each week, typically grossed over $1.5 million a year. week before the pandemic; it was selling strongly again after resuming performances last fall, but its box office receipts plummeted with the arrival of the Omicron variant and never fully rebounded. The show grossed $747,931 in the week ending June 5. By the time it closes, “Tina” will have played 27 preview performances and 482 regular performances.
