By now, most have noticed that it’s that special time of year when businesses profess their solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community by wrapping themselves in a rainbow flag and wishing us “Happy Pride. in order to make more money. I guess that’s at least a more thoughtful corporate legend than the “Homo Estas? Very well thank you. #love wins” tweet we received from Chipotle a few years ago. (To be fair, it fits the Chipotle vibe.) And it’s definitely hotter than the “Happy Pride! Here’s 20% off” I get from various entities trying to get me to buy things I don’t. I probably don’t need to. The same goes for all the companies that ask gay creatives like me to actually give them free publicity in exchange for nothing (the answer is no, give me money).

That’s why the deep misconception attached to the Whopper aside, to Burger King’s credit, they also donated some money to the cause ― pledge to donate 40 cents from the purchase of every Ch’King sold this month (up to a maximum donation of $250,000) to the Human Rights Campaign, the nation’s largest LGBTQ advocacy group.

Not counting Burger King’s money, but it looks like they could increase that number in addition to giving their employees, many of whom are likely LGBTQ, a pay raise. Yet I’m afraid that under the wave of growing anti-LGBTQ laws from elected Republicans across the country, we’re ending up in a situation where corporations won’t even bother to recognize us at all, and their collective flops in celebrating real principles of Pride Month will fade from public memory.

After convincing enough white people that the academic and legal framework known as critical race theory somehow escaped law schools across America and threatened to instill white guilt into the precious minds of white children aged from K-eternity to try and winning the election in 2021, Republicans moved on to new goals: every letter from the LGBTQ+ community.

The result was over 300 anti-LGBTQ bills introduced across the country, including several states seeking to ban transgender women and girls to compete on gender-conforming sports teams, and in some states the outright banning of gender-affirming care for transgender youth where in some cases it would be a crime physicians to provide such care to minors.

There is also the passage of Florida “Don’t Say Gay” Bill, which limits restrictions on the teaching of LGBTQ topics in schools. In view of its adoption and signing into law, Ron DeSantis accused his critics of supporting “the sexualization of children in kindergarten”. (Similarly, the man he politically models himself on, former President Donald Trump, jumped on the rhetoric and compared teaching children about gender and pronouns to “child abuse.”)

More recently, Republican Texas State Rep. Bryan Slaton announced that he would introduce legislation to ban drag shows in the presence of minors. As silly as such legislation may seem, the homophobic and transphobic sentiments behind such proposals cannot be underestimated. And even though queer and trans people and their supporters are labeled as predators, it’s only Republicans proposing to inspect the genitals of female high school and college athletes.

The rhetoric has not yet necessarily moved public opinion, as evidenced by a survey published in April by the University of Chicago Harris School of Public Policy and the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, which found that, overall, Americans lean slightly toward broadening discussions of sexuality in kindergarten to grade 12 classes. But I disagree with political observers, who argue that it’s only a matter of time before today’s anti-LGBTQ rhetoric stops working in favor of Republicans. They don’t seem to know how their country works.

We cannot all afford to exist in such a bubble.

We currently live in a political climate where the nation is waiting for a Supreme Court with a 6-3 conservative majority to deny millions of women the right to abortion. At Ketanji Brown Jackson’s confirmation hearing, Republican senators like John Coryn of Texas questioned her on marriage equality ― suggesting this is the next target should Roe be knocked down. Even before all of this happened, anti-LGBTQ violence dramatically increased under the Trump administration.

I understand that since Trump found his way to the White House, there has been too much chaos to follow in the news cycle on any given day, but it’s hard to ignore the model of white Christian nationalism informing much of GOP talking points then, or now.

The same applies to their growing authoritarian impulse, or in the case of Ron DeSantis, who uses his power as Governor of Florida to punish people for the purpose of launching a presidential bid, a fascist fold. Disney did the right thing by listening to its employees and issuing a statement against DeSantis’ cruel ‘Don’t Say Gay’ bill, but its response was revoke the special tax status of the company. He has since repeated this method of reprisals on the Tampa Bay Rays for supporting gun safety reform.

Far be it from me to distrust the name of companies that typically put profit above all else, but if DeSantis does make his way into the White House, chances are he’ll continue that practice and use the powers of the federal government. government to bring businesses to heel. I don’t think most would put up this kind of fight under such pressure. Already, some are caving in to pressure from Republicans making the LGBTQ community their new favorite punching bag.

State Farm, for example, dropped its support for a program providing LGBTQ-themed children’s books to teachers and libraries after complaints from curators.

“This program which included gender identity books was meant to promote inclusivity,” said Victor Terry, State Farm’s chief diversity officer, would have written in an e-mail to staff. “We will no longer support this program,” he said, adding that “conversations about gender and identity should take place at home with parents.”

The program, which would see officers and staff distribute books to community centers, libraries and teachers, aimed to “increase LGBTQ+ book representation and help our communities have empowering, meaningful and empowering conversations with children 5 years and older.

Programs that benefit people like me, a gay author. It is offensive to anyone to buy into the idea that any mere mention of us indicates some kind of perversion. And it really sucks for people who now have to consider getting a less intolerant car insurance company.

There are others comments from americans CEOs who give other areas of concern, but ultimately the problem is a major political party that has made a community a target, and not only is the mainstream media ignoring or dismissing him as “culture war” the other major political party seems ill-prepared to direct any appropriate type of backflow. Meanwhile, Marjorie Taylor Greene means This, when she says she wants pride month to end to save straight people.

I don’t place my value or my sense of pride in whether or not a big company validates me through a corny wink and other lackluster offers, but without real public reaction, the companies ― who the Supreme Court has told us are people ― may end up feeling unsafe to even try.
