Biden missed a golden opportunity for unity by not condemning Kavanaugh's assassin thwarted on Kimmell

President Joe Biden appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live Wednesday evening for a long and, sometimes, elliptical discussion of his first year and a half in office. But the commander-in-chief missed a golden opportunity for some bipartisan unity by failing to clearly condemn threats of political violence in the wake of Wednesday’s foiled assassination attempt. Brett Kavanaugh.

On Wednesday morning, news broke that a 26-year-old California man was arrested near Judge Kavanaugh’s home in Maryland with a gun and knife after calling 911 himself. would have claimed to have suicidal thoughts and revealed his goal was to kill the Supreme Court justice over what appears to be a possible overturning of the landmark abortion rights ruling Roe vs. Wade.

Clearly, tensions are high in the country over reproductive rights and a potential reversal of Roe vs. Wade is a huge deal. But showing up in front of someone’s house armed and with the intent to kill is, you know, a horrible and illegal thing.

The White House released a statement on behalf of Biden on Wednesday, which condemned the plot to assassinate the lawyer.

“The President strongly condemns the actions of this individual and is grateful to law enforcement for quickly taking him into custody,” the White House spokesperson said. Karine Jean-Pierre said, during a press gag. “As the President has always made clear, public officials, including judges, must be able to do their jobs without worrying about their personal safety or that of their families, and any threat of violence or attempt to intimidate judges has no place in our society. .”

But President Biden didn’t mention it once during his roughly 23-minute interview with jimmy kimmel which aired Wednesday night on ABC, and the late-night host never even talked about it. Of course, they talked about topics that were more politically charitable to the president, who has complained about messaging issues and unfair treatment by a new media landscape that seems to have taken Biden by surprise.

Much of the interview went exactly as one would expect. There were few unique or surprising things about it. Was he sometimes a bit disjointed? Sure, but not much different from how we typically see the president behave publicly, for better or for worse.

But imagine if the first thing President Biden did on Kimmel was to respond to Kavanaugh’s attack in a clear and forceful way? What if it opened with something like this:

“I would like to begin by condemning the failed attack on Judge Kavanaugh that occurred today. I totally condemn this kind of behavior and thank the police who arrested this suspect. But also? People, we need to calm down. Nothing good will ever come out of political violence, and I don’t care if you’re a Democrat or a Republican. We are ALL Americans and we have more in common with each other than differences. We need to breathe deeply and calm down. If you have a problem with what is happening politically? Vote! Protest peacefully. But violent attacks are never the solution and make things much worse than better.

Standing up against political assassination attempts is something everyone can agree on, right? But somehow impossible, it was never suggested to Biden by a White House communications team whose incompetence to support the president becomes more obvious each passing week, especially since Jen Psaki left the administration.

Biden’s appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live had all the marks of a communications reset. A chance for an unfiltered and disintermediated Biden experiment with a political ally and a fan. It reminded me a lot of when the then president barack obama appeared on The Daily show end of October 2010 before a mid-term bombardment. Biden needed a media victory, and being surrounded by an adoring public should have been the tonic he needed as his approval ratings plummeted.

But it was a real missed opportunity. The President reiterated many of the same talking points that brought him to this position and offered none of the bromides to the other side that could very well have transcended the bitter political divide we find ourselves in. Exposing an assassination attempt on Judge Kavanaugh would have been a great message to remind the nation that he is the president of all Americans, not just Democrats.

It’s a shame he missed this opportunity.
