'Star Trek: Picard' Season 2, Episode 10 Recap: Q's Final Gift

So after all that, all the Jurati-Borg Queen combination had to do was show up early and none of this season’s craziness would have happened?

A very funny moment comes when a member of the crew of Excelsior, during the climax of the “Picard” finale, wonders what happened to Rios, who was left behind in the 21st century. Picard slams: “Stay on task, helm. That’s an order.” That’s basically how the show’s writers have treated audiences for most of its two seasons. Don’t worry about things that don’t make sense. Just focus on the direction the story is taking.

In this case, what the story tells us is that Q, in his final moments, wanted to let Picard know that his mother’s death was not his fault. (Why is Q dying? From what? It’s never explained.) And that the first step for Picard to find love was for him to love himself. It’s a wonderful lesson, except, as Picard points out, innocent people died along the way for a life lesson.

Not that Q cares. And neither does Picard, it turns out, because Picard hugs his soon-to-be-deceased tormentor. It’s a touching moment. The fact is that everything we saw in “Picard” taught us that what is dead will never die. There’s no reason to believe that Q is dying, in the traditional sense, because no major character dies in this series. That even includes those who do, as they’re just brought back later – sometimes with a literal snap of the finger, like our old friend Elnor. (If I was Picard, I might have asked Q for more people to be brought back to life. “Hey, while you’re at it, instead of bringing Elnor back, which I’m not that near, would you mind bringing Data back? Or Tasha Yar?)

John de Lancie did a terrific job as Q, as he normally does. But the way the character was written this season felt off. If this was all to teach Picard about forgiveness, why did Q seem so angry and vindictive earlier in the season? Recall his previous conversations with Soong, where he seemed to imply that he wanted revenge on Picard.

  • So after all the talk of changing the timeline with the lesser use of futuristic technology, Rios ends up staying in the 21st century with Teresa with centuries of knowledge in her head. We learn from Guinan that he did not use much of this knowledge. Rios is a better man than me. If I went back 400 years and stayed there, I would be known as the inventor of cars, the iPhone, electricity, and Twitter.

  • It was a very nice return from Wil Wheaton as the traveler formerly known as Wesley Crusher. I have no idea if this is a one-off or if it will factor into next season when the “Next Generation” cast returns. But Wesley was a character who usually had the end of the stick in the original “Next Generation.” (Last we saw him – when he was spotted at Riker and Troi’s wedding in “Nemesis” – he appeared to have returned to Starfleet.)

  • Soong releasing the file titled “Project Khan” gives us a glimpse of what the next season will be like. We know that Soong is an expert in genetics and that the biggest villain of all “Trek”, Khan Noonien Singh, is the result of genetic experimentation. Sounds like a precursor to the eugenics wars. Should be fun!

  • Alison Pill has previously said she won’t be returning for “Picard” season 3, and with Rios now dead in the past, I wonder how many of the “Picard” crew are returning, if at all. Maybe next season will really be a “Next Generation” season.

  • What’s going on with the transwarp conduit Queen Jurati-Borg wants to know more about? This could also be a clue for Season 3. There are so many questions about what the Borg have been up to for the past 400 years. Were they hiding from the Evil Borg? Haven’t previous attempts at assimilation taken place? Stay on task, bar! It’s an order!

  • Farewell to the Watcher, Tallinn, who stays away and watches until she doesn’t. Who had special powers, except when she didn’t.

  • Finally, what happened to FBI agent Martin Wells? Imagine working your whole life to find out if aliens exist, get your theory confirmed, and then… what?
