Russia invasion of ukraine deserves the strongest possible military response and the toughest sanctions, President Nancy Pelosi said Monday, adding that the West should not be deterred by the threat of retaliation from Moscow.

Following her visit to Kyiv over the weekend, Pelosi held talks in Poland with President Andrzej Duda on Monday, a meeting aimed at deepening Washington’s partnership with a key country. NATO ally as US is stepping up dramatically his involvement in Ukraine’s struggle against Russian forces.

Ms Pelosi said ‘the strongest possible military response, the strongest sanctions’ are needed ‘to prove this is not tolerable’.

“We should do nothing less because of a threat from Russia,” she said. “They have already carried out their threat which has killed children and families, civilians and the rest.”

Russia’s war placed Poland in a critical position, with increasing numbers of American servicemen stationed there. Poland has also become a transit point for arms and humanitarian aid to Ukraine, and the main destination for Ukrainian refugees.

The Polish government has also been a strong advocate for tougher sanctions against Russia, including in the energy sector. On Monday, EU energy ministers met in Brussels to discuss new measures to limit Russian energy exports, including a phase-out of Russian oil.

Russia’s state energy company, Gazprom, halted gas shipments to Poland and Bulgaria last week, sparking a spike in natural gas futures prices in Europe and underscoring how difficult it is for many European countries, including Germany, to reduce their dependence on the Russian energy sector. .

After becoming the highest-ranking US official to visit kyiv since the start of the war, Ms Pelosi vowed on Sunday to support Ukraine “until the victory is won.” She will soon return to Washington, where members of Congress from both parties have called for swift approval of President Biden’s request for more artillery, anti-tank weapons and other equipment for Ukraine.

The Senate will likely accept Mr Biden’s request for a supplement this week $33 billion in military aid, setting the United States on pace to spend as much to help Ukraine as it did annually on average for the war in Afghanistan.

Senator Tim Kaine, a Democrat from Virginia, said on CBS’ “Face the Nation” on Sunday that the Senate would resume the aid program “as soon as we get back to the Senate tomorrow.” And I think we have to push it very, very quickly.

Representative Michael McCaul, a Republican from Texas, said on ABC’s “This Week” that “time is running out. The next two to three weeks are going to be very crucial and very decisive in this war.

Ms Pelosi said she had also discussed with US Ambassador to Warsaw Mark Brzezinski the possible expansion of NATO’s military presence in Poland as part of “an ongoing conversation about how we support global security.”

She reaffirmed “our nation’s commitment to continue supporting Poland’s humanitarian efforts” and saluted the people of the country for hosting more than three million Ukrainian refugees, more than any other country, most of them they are hosted by individuals.
