Karine Jean-Pierre, the new White House press secretary, knows the difference between her and each of her predecessors.

“I am obviously aware that my presence on this podium represents a few firsts. I am a black, queer, immigrant woman – the first of three to hold this position,” she said. told reporters at the start of his first official briefing earlier this month. “If it hadn’t been for generations of people breaking down barriers before me, I wouldn’t be here.”

Jean-Pierre went on to say that “representation matters” and celebrated President Joe Biden for having “the most diverse administration in history.”

Indeed it does, but the visibility only goes so far.

While it’s true that Biden can tout a number of historic personnel changes, his administration has also worked feverishly to restore a number of political norms – including engaging with those who are openly hostile to many communities to which Jean-Pierre belongs.

Discuss his former boss and former White House press secretary, Jen Psaki departure to MSNBCJean Pierre told the Los Angeles Times, “We will miss her so much.”

I will not do it. I agree that many people enjoyed Psaki’s exchanges with Fox News White House correspondent Peter Doocy, but I always found them irritating. Doocy often asks leading and stupid questions when he gets the chance to speak, and for my life, I’ve never understood why this administration bothered to reward his idiocy with airtime — especially if the consider his place of work.

Sure, some people loved their little tit-for-tat outbursts on social media and some cable news channels because of Psaki’s sarcastic retorts — which fans called “Psaki bombs” — but they just gave additional legitimacy to the racist propaganda vehicle masquerading as a press briefing.

Same the most squeaky thing is that, despite all the coverage of their “tense exchanges”, Psaki and Doccy seemed to think quite well of each other in the end, as evidenced by them play well at the end of PSAki’s term.

It’s not like I’m advocating for Pskai to stand on the podium and curse Doocy every day, but he works for a place that vilifies black people, the LGBTQ community, and immigrants. Considering that Jean-Pierre was PSAKI’s number 2 and that Black people collectively have a lot to do with Biden’s 2020 election victoryhow could one justify the show that eventually covered a network that helped ruin the country?

PSAKI and the whitewashed mainstream media defending this schtick might treat it like a game – because what FoxNews done one way or another doesn’t impact them the way it can impact people like me and Jean-Pierre.

“While Biden can tout a number of historic personnel changes, his administration has also worked feverishly to restore a number of political norms — including engaging with those openly hostile to newcomers. many communities to which Jean-Pierre belongs. ”

As for those ‘Psaki bombs’, for all the grief people thought Psaki had given Doocy – when I think of the times she actually tried to bring reporters to heel, I remember how condescendingly she answered questions from Yamiche Alcindor of PBS about the White House’s views on Haitian immigrants and the resignation of U.S. diplomat in Haiti Daniel Foote during a press briefing last September.

A more recent example is when a reporter asked about Israeli police beating mourners with batons in the funeral procession for Shireen Abu Akleh, Palestinian-American journalist and veteran Al Jazeera correspondent beaten down by Israeli forces while reporting on a military raid in the West Bank. psaki said it is not the role of the United States “to assess or analyze policy on the ground in Israel”.

at least i can guess a reason psaki replied the last question as she didbut in general, the frustrations of many marginalized communities over the Biden administration paying lip service to their concerns were exemplified by the tone of the White House spokeswoman.

Psaki is an effective communicator, but what she communicated often may not have necessarily helped the Biden administration, according to her ballot numbers and his loss of support from his most vital constituents. Jean-Pierre has an opportunity to help deliver the change the administration needs as we head into midterm elections and Biden’s looming re-election bid.

Jean-Pierre should start by completely ignoring Fox employees. She didn’t do that the first day — choosing to engage with Doocy, as PSAki did.

It went as well as expected. Doocy posed the spurious question, “How does raising corporate taxes reduce the cost of gas, the cost of a used car, the cost of food, for ordinary Americans?”

Some experts have already criticized Jean-Pierre’s answer for being ineffective, but no response would have been enough for Doocy or the network he works for. By hiring her, Jean-Pierre fell into the trap of taking an unserious network seriously and making negative headlines for herself and the administration. It is and always will be a losing situation for Jean-Pierre, but it is not too late to change course.

Fox’s biggest star, Tucker Carlson, has already given him plenty of reasons to go to his bosses with such a request.

Upon the announcement of Jean-Pierre’s new role, Carlson said the administration had found someone as “shallow, mean and partisan” as Psaki.

Unsurprisingly, he then questioned the professional qualifications of Jean-Pierre.

“Karine Jean-Pierre is our first White House LGBTQ+ press secretary and that’s all you need to know,” Carlson said. “It’s a good thing, shut up and celebrate. That’s why she got the job. She’s in the right group, and in the Biden administration, which thinks exclusively in terms of groups and never in terms of individuals, because individuals are messy and troublesome, the group is all that matters.

“Show us your photo and we’ll tell you if you’re qualified for the job,” Carlson added.

It’s rich, coming from someone born into wealth and privilege who floundered on multiple cable news networks until he tapped deeper into his racism, sexism, homophobia and transphobia – but it’s a perfect example of why Jean-Pierre should ignore all Fox requests for airtime. Carlson will only get worse. It will be the same for Laura Ingraham. It will be the same for the sycophants who harbor”fox and friends.” So will all the other wacky, absurd, crazed shitty people hired there.

They’re going to call her a racist and call her unqualified no matter how she answers them, so why bother? This time can be spent on a Spanish-language network, black media, or LGBTQ media.

No one should forget that after Jean-Pierre spoke about her historic nomination and its significance, she answered reporters’ questions about the white supremacist teenager who staged a mass shooting at a grocery store in Buffalo, New York, which left 10 people dead and three injured.

In the days that followed, many of these reporters and the media outlets they work for have already dropped the story — a testament to the attention paid by a predominantly white political press to hunted black people in America.

It’s a climate that Fox helped create and perpetuate. So while a breakthrough choice for the White House press secretary matters, what she does with her platform matters just as much, if not more. There is no need to continue helping those who stoke animosity for profit and sport, in tandem with a sectarian political party, to gain legitimacy. They want to live in their world devoid of facts. Karine Jean-Pierre and the administration she is talking about today should let them.
