CNN National Security and former Homeland Security official Juliette Kayem was on a streak Tuesday with some interesting claims following the tragic shooting at Robb Elementary School in UvaldeTexas.

salvador ramos, 18, shot 19 children and two adults, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety. Ramos was shot dead by the police. It is the third deadliest school shooting in US history, behind only Virginia Tech in 2007 and Sandy Hook in 2012.

“Investigatively, I’m going to do what the facts tell me now,” said Kayyem, who went on to say that immigration enforcement near Uvalde should be stopped altogether.

Kayyem said the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District is an “80 percent Hispanic school district,” but the figure is 90 percent, according to the Texas Education Agency. It is the overall demographics of Uvalde which is 80% Hispanic, according to the United States Census Bureau.

Kayyem also called on the United States to suspend immigration enforcement in the region following the shooting.

“The most important thing the federal government can do right now is to say there will be no immigration enforcement during this time in this area. There is a large immigrant population,” she said. “You want parents with their children. You don’t want people hiding now. And we have to make it clear as soon as possible because of the political issues in Texas.

She then reiterated this position:

This survey is really going to be about motive at this point and then, of course, what happens to families. I mean one more time, though, and this is important. Again, I don’t know the motives, we don’t know the motives. I’m just talking about demographics. It is a predominantly Hispanic population with a large immigrant community, relatively close to San Antonio.

We need the federal government to say right now, everyone is basically safe haven right now in terms of immigration status. We need people to come forward, not to be afraid of immigration status. Grab their kids, grab their family members, because what happens in incidents like this is when we’re going to have a strong police presence, a strong federal presence. We know it. Many people don’t react, especially if their status is unknown, don’t react to police presence like you or I can.

And we want to make sure they know that despite all the politics going on in Texas right now, it’s the federal government that’s in charge of immigration enforcement, and that people are safe. Gather your children, gather your families. Do not hide. The White House just needs to say it now. It shouldn’t take long.

Besides how absurd and irresponsible it would be to stop immigration enforcement wherever the law should be enforced, Uvalde is 75 miles from the southern border. It should also be mentioned that Border Patrol agents responded to the shooting and one of them shot and killed Ramos. Also, just because there is a Hispanic population in Uvalde does not mean that all Hispanics are immigrants. And it’s unclear how many illegal aliens reside in the school district.

Additionally, Kayyem misquoted the Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton like saying that school children should be armed. Paxton called for teachers to be armed. Kayyem should have known that and that it is illegal for anyone under 21 to carry a gun.

Finally, Kayeem claimed that the school had been hit by artillery when it was not. “They have 18 small bodies that are being destroyed by very heavy artillery and the only person who knows is a relative,” she said.

Kayyem hosted a clinic on what not to do in the wake of a news event, especially a shooting. Facts must replace emotions.

May the 21 killed rest in peace.
