Senator Ted Cruz lied through his teeth Tuesday night when they claimed Democrats wanted to kill babies after they were born. They don’t.
Cruz was with Laura Ingraham to discuss the recent explosive leak of a draft Supreme Court decision that appears to reveal an impending reversal of Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 decision that legally protects a woman’s right to abort a fetus.
The Texas senator has a remarkable ability to embarrass himself in public – sometimes even on Fox News – and did not break his record-breaking streak of embarrassment during a live TV appearance.
Cruz made the baseless claim that Democrats are so pro-abortion they’re willing to kill babies after they’re born, which Ingraham let go unchecked. Ironically, Cruz brought up this false story in the context of how Democrats create “strawman” arguments in their debates over choice.
“Do you look at how extreme they are? Take a look at Ralph Northam, the former governor of Virginia until just a year ago he was governor of Virginia,” Cruz said of the former governor and physician. “He did a radio interview where he not only advocated for abortion up until the moment of birth, but horribly he advocated for abortion after birth, which is just plain murder.”
“He described how he would deliver a child. He would console the child. The child was breathing, crying out of the womb, and then having a conversation with the parents about what to do with that child, in other words, whether or not to kill the child he had just given birth.
Northam did a radio interview and was asked about very rare third-trimester abortions, and the description Cruz gave was accurate with one critical difference. The former governor outlined a procedure for parents who give birth to a non-viable fetus. Non-viable means there is no chance that this poor newborn will survive on its own.
It is an unspeakably sad, tragic and rare circumstance. Mediaite’s Tommy Christopher accurately describes Northam’s answer and the correct context, here:
“But I would like to tell you one, first thing I would say is why decisions like this should be made by the providers, the doctors and the mothers and fathers who are involved,” Northam continued. “When we talk about third-trimester abortions, these are performed with the consent of the mother, obviously, with the consent of the doctors – more than one doctor, by the way – and this is done in cases where there may be serious malformations There may be a fetus that is not viable.
This is clearly a statement about all third trimester abortions, which are, in fact, extremely rare. Then Northam responded to Tran’s response.
“So in this particular example, if a mother is in labor, I can tell you exactly what would happen,” Northam said. “The baby would be delivered.”
“The child would be delivered”, which means that it would not be aborted. That’s probably what a doctor would have told Gilbert had he been present at the hearing.
“The baby would be kept comfortable. The infant would be resuscitated if that is what the mother and family desired, and then a discussion would ensue between the doctors and the mother,” Northam continued.
Thus, the baby was delivered, resuscitated and held comfortably. He is now a living human patient. The “discussion” described by Northam would then involve another Position laws and ethical considerations governing the pursuit of life support and other extraordinary measures.
Unless Northam goes on to add “And this discussion would be ‘Hey Doc, can we have an abortion now?’ Awesome ! he doesn’t suggest “infanticide” or anything like that. He talks about the heartbreaking decisions that families of patients of all ages can face.
In fact, Northam didn’t go on to say that the parents would discuss whether the doctor might have murdered the child.
Ted Cruz may have an extremely repulsive personality, but he’s by no means stupid. He most certainly knows that Northam was talking about the sad cases of non-viable newborns, but his commitment to scoring political points is far greater than his commitment to telling the truth.
Exploiting the tragedy of non-viable newborns for political gain is new low for Ted Cruz, a guy not well known for hitting the high roads of all kinds.
