You don’t necessarily need a nice, ergonomic watering can to keep your potted plants alive. But it doesn’t hurt to have one.
While any old pitcher or repurposed soup can will do, it’s not as fun to use – so you might not be inclined to use it as often. And proper watering helps get the right amount of water to the right place while reducing spillage.
“One of the benefits of having a watering can is that it gives you a little more directionality with your watering,” said Lisa Muñoz, houseplant decorator and founder of Leaf and Junebased in Brooklyn.
For small indoor pots, a watering can with a narrow spout provides extreme precision. For larger containers, one with a rain shower rose can provide a gentle spray. A model with a removable rose can do it all.
Another benefit of having a proper watering can is that many are sculpturally attractive even when not in use, so you can store them out in the open.
“There are so many really beautiful watering cans that look great next to your plants,” Ms. Muñoz said. “They’re not something ugly that you have to put away.”

How much water should it contain? For an indoor watering can, “I would go with a gallon or less,” Ms. Muñoz said. “For the exterior, I would go with something much bigger.”
-
Where should the handles be? Along with a handle on the side, she said, “I really like something that has a handle on the top.” This is especially useful when the box is heavy with water.
-
Which material is the best? “I definitely prefer a metal watering can,” Ms. Muñoz said, although she added that plastic watering cans will do the job and generally weigh less.
