White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki is retiring at the end of this week, and, if reports are correct, she’ll land some sort of hosting gig at MSNBC. It will be replaced by Karine Jean-Pierre, a former MSNBC contributor. Oh and Symone Sanderthe former Deputy Press Secretary to the Vice President Kamala Harrisjust launched his new show last weekend also on MSNBC.

The warm relationship between Device Media and the White House is a story well told. In fact, cable news contributors often leave their TV gigs (like Psaki leaving CNN) to serve in new administrations. It’s as predictable as someone using “return of the swallows to Capistrano” as a cliched metaphor.

What is unique about this administration, however, is how little attention these high profile moves have received from the media that has breathlessly covered the revolving door between Trump’s White House and Fox News. It was a story then, but why isn’t it anymore? There is no clear answer other than different standards applied to the Biden administration and the media that covers them.

A quick search for similar stories over the past five years is revealing. NBC News published “The Trump-Fox News revolving door is perfect for Hope Hicks — but terrible for America“, Media Matters highlighted “A full review of the revolving door between Fox and the Trump administration“, The Washington Post produced a video titled “The revolving door between Fox News and the Trump administration,” and new york radio Hour Featured “Jeanne Mayer on the revolving door between Fox News and the White House.”

There are loads of other examples, but you understand Fox News’ cozy relationship with the Trump White House has been covered extensively. And rightly so! How can a media fairly cover an administration populated by so many former colleagues? It is possible but certainly more difficult. And that deserves to be covered. In fact, we’ve covered it extensively ourselves.

Now, to be fair, when news broke that Psaki had some kind of pending deal with MSNBC while still a publicist, she got A LOT of attention. I even argued that she had crossed an important ethical line by remaining on the government payroll as a press secretary dealing with outlets that were soon to be her competitors. But even this criticism that Psaki received pales in comparison to the revolving door narrative we saw between 2016 and 2020.

A cursory glance at top Biden White House officials looks a lot like the last administration’s CNN contributors page.

There are Tony Blinkenwho served as a global affairs analyst for CNN and is currently Secretary of State in the Biden administration. Jennifer Granholma former CNN contributor, now serves as Secretary of Energy. Samantha Vinograda former CNN national security analyst, has announced that she will serve as a senior adviser to the Department of Homeland Security. Susan Hennessya former CNN global affairs analyst, will serve as senior counsel for the department’s national security division. Thomas Nides was chosen to be ambassador to Israel. His wife, Virginia Mosley, is the SVP of Newsgathering at CNN. It’s a huge revolving door!

And, of course, the Trump-Fox News revolving door was built over four years. And there’s a material difference between Fox’s supportive relationship with Trump and the more subtle but insidious coziness between other networks and the Biden administration, which isn’t even a year and a half old.

Perhaps by 2024 we will see Biden’s revolving door come under similar scrutiny? But you and I know that will never happen.
