Nominations for this year’s Tony Awards will be delayed by nearly a week, awards administrators said on Friday, as enough actors have been discharged with cases of coronavirus that it has become difficult for award nominators to see all eligible performances.

The Broadway League and the American Theater Wing, which present the awards, said nominations would now be announced on May 9, instead of May 3. The awards ceremony itself will, as planned, remain on June 12.

The change reflects the extraordinary disturbance the coronavirus pandemic has caused to this theatrical season. Several shows – on Broadway, Off Broadway, across the country, and in Britain, Canada and elsewhere – have been forced to cancel performances and change times due to coronavirus cases.

On Broadway, several shows rushed to open before the eligibility deadline, which was supposed to be April 28 but will now be May 4. Four shows — “Paradise Square,” “Macbeth,” “Plaza Suite” and “A Strange Loop” — canceled multiple performances due to coronavirus cases. (Among those who tested positive was the “Macbeth ” Daniel Craig and the stars of the “Plaza Suite” Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick.)

Even now, when all the shows are on, some actors are still missing. This made it difficult for nominators to see all eligible shows with all eligible artists on stage.

Six shows are scheduled for next week, including “Funny Girl,” “The Skin of Our Teeth,” “A Strange Loop,” “POTUS,” “Mr. Saturday Night” and “Macbeth.”
