The Boston Symphony Orchestra announced Monday that it is canceling a four-city tour of Europe due to concerns about the spread of the coronavirus in Europe and the United States.

The orchestra said the tour, which was to include stops next month in Germany, Austria and France, was not feasible due to the risk of the virus disrupting travel. The orchestra recently reported an increase in the number of cases among players and members of the Tanglewood Festival Chorus.

“Given the continued presence of Covid, brought home by its unfortunate impact on a significant number of our own artists, we must keep the health and safety of everyone involved with the Boston Symphony Orchestra as our first priority,” Gail Samuel, president and general manager of the orchestra, said in a statement. “Unfortunately, the only prudent and responsible course of action is, with deep regret, to cancel the European tour.”

Many classical music ensembles hoped to resume world tours this year after the long interruption caused by the pandemic. But the persistence of the Omicron variant continued to complicate plans.

The Metropolitan Opera Orchestra recently announced that it was canceling a tour of Japan and South Korea in June due to concerns over the virus.

Orchestral tours have been a staple of classical music for decades, when the top ensembles in the United States and Europe began organizing whirlwind tours to world capitals. At that time, touring served not only artistic purposes, but also commercial ones, offering orchestras exposure to new markets and, sometimes, lucrative sponsorships.

Touring is no longer as lucrative as it used to be, except for a small number of elite ensembles like the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. But they confer international prestige on orchestras – an attractive prospect for donors – and give ensembles the opportunity to strengthen their cohesion.

Foreign travel came to a halt at the start of the pandemic, when classic touring was one of the first industries to shut down. (In late January 2020, before the disruption caused by the coronavirus was widely felt in the United States, the Boston Symphony announced that it was cancel a tour in Asia.)

Other ensembles are planning to go abroad in the coming months. The New York Philharmonic is planning a festival residency in Usedom, Germany next month. The Philadelphia Orchestra is planning a European tour at the end of the summer.
