Billions of dollars in foreign and domestic energy investment in Mexico hang in the balance Tuesday, when the country’s Supreme Court hands down its ruling on the constitutionality of a 2021 electricity law that stifles competition. Yet the significance of the decision will go far beyond pesos and centavos.
Through its decision, the High Court will indicate whether it is still independent or whether it has become a tool of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. If it is the latter, Mexican democracy will hang by a thread, if it survives.
