Donald Trump Jr.'s text lays out strategies to fight election outcome

The eldest son of former President Donald J. Trump sent the White House chief of staff a text message two days after Election Day in 2020 that outlined strategies for declaring his father the winner regardless of the election result, have people close to the exchange said on Friday.

The text, which was reported earlier by CNN, was sent two days before Joseph R. Biden Jr. was declared the winner of the election. The recipient, Mark Meadows, turned over a cache of his text messages to the House committee investigating the events leading up to the deadly riot on Capitol Hill on Jan. 6, 2021, as Electoral College results in favor of Mr. Biden were in the process of being certified. .

“It’s very simple,” Donald Trump Jr. wrote to Mr. Meadows on Nov. 5, 2020. He wrote at another point, “We have many paths, we control them all.”

The post went on to lay out a variety of options that Mr. Trump or his allies ultimately used to try to overturn the election results, from legal challenges to promoting other voter lists to concentrating efforts on the statutory date of January 6. for the certification of the results of the electoral college.

In a statement, the young Mr Trump’s lawyer, Alan Futerfas, confirmed that the text message had been sent, but suggested it was someone else’s idea that Donald Trump Jr. was forwarding.

“After the election, Don received many messages from supporters and others,” Futerfas said. “Given the date, this message likely came from someone else and was forwarded.”

Yet the text message underscores the extraordinary lengths Mr. Trump’s allies and official aides were already going to just after Election Day to keep Mr. Trump in power if voters across the country did not.

Donald Trump Jr. and his brother Eric called on Republicans to keep fighting on behalf of their father immediately after Election Day as votes were still being counted in a series of close races in battleground states like La Pennsylvania and Arizona.

“The complete lack of action from nearly all of the ‘GOP 2024 hopefuls’ is pretty incredible,” Donald Jr. wrote on Twitter the same day he sent the text to Mr. Meadows. “They have a perfect platform to show they are ready and able to fight, but they will be bowing to the media crowd instead. Don’t worry, @realDonaldTrump will fight and they can watch as usual!”

The House committee is investigating what led to the assault on the Capitol and the various efforts to try to thwart Mr. Biden’s victory, all of which were unsuccessful. In the end, a crowd of Mr. Trump supporters stormed the Capitol during the certification. At least seven people died in connection with the riot.

Mr Trump and a number of his advisers pressured Vice President Mike Pence to use his ceremonial role in Electoral College certification to overturn the process, which Mr Pence was adamant was beyond of his authority.

The text message that Donald Trump Jr. sent to Mr. Meadows acknowledged this scenario, which was defended by a lawyer advising President Trump, John C. Eastman. “Either we have a vote that WE control and WE win, OR it goes back to Congress on January 6, 2021,” the text message read.

The younger Mr Trump also texted Mr Meadows during the riot, urging him to urge the President to take action while the violence unfolded.
