A shooting outside a Des Moines high school on Monday afternoon left a 15-year-old boy dead and two other teenage boys in critical condition in what appears to be a drive-by attack, authorities said.

Des Moines police responded at 2:48 p.m. to the shooting on the grounds of East High School, which serves about 2,000 students in the Iowa capital.

The teens appeared to have been shot with a gun fired from a passing vehicle, Sgt. Paul Parizek, spokesman for the Des Moines Police Department, said in a press release.

Potential suspects have been arrested, Sergeant Parizek said, although no charges have yet been filed. Several search warrants are being executed.

It was not immediately clear what prompted the shooting at the school, one of several public high schools in Des Moines. The 15-year-old boy who was killed didn’t go to high school. The two seriously injured teenage girls, 16 and 18, are students at East High School, police said.

“We know that the children of this school are the most precious cargo in our community,” Sergeant Parizek said at the press conference. “It’s sad, but we train for it. We have to prepare for it, and that’s why.

Pupils and teachers sheltered in place as the school was placed under a lockdown which was lifted later in the afternoon. Police said the building was secure and there was no longer a threat.

Kaylie Shannon, a pupil at the school, told the television station KCCI that she was outside the school when she heard gunshots.

“I was just sitting in my friend’s car and suddenly I heard 11 gunshots and screaming boys,” she said.

Des Moines Public Schools Superintendent Thomas Ahart said in a press release that guns were “far too readily available” in Iowa and throughout the United States, and called for “real change in gun laws and access”.

“We live in a time when shootings in and near schools have become all too common,” Mr Ahart said. “Our staff and students are forced to train for these incidents and the trauma associated with repeated drills and incidents will stay with them for years to come.”

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives has declared the Twitter Monday that special agents from his office were on the scene and helping with the investigation.
