Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Calvin Ridley has been suspended for at least the entire 2022 season for betting on NFL games last year, one of the toughest penalties a major U.S. sports league has ever faced. inflicted since the NFL rushed. embrace an expansion of legalized betting on games.

Commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement Monday that Ridley, 27, placed bets on NFL games for a five-day period in late November 2021 while away from the club to focus on his mental health. .

After an investigation, the league “did not uncover any evidence to indicate that inside information was used or that any play was compromised in any way,” Goodell said in the statement. “Nor was there any evidence to suggest any awareness by coaches, staff, teammates or other players of his betting activity.”

Still, Goodell said “the integrity of the game” is fundamental to the league’s success, and Ridley put that integrity at risk.

Ridley placed three parlay bets between Nov. 23 and Nov. 28 on the Hard Rock Sportsbook mobile app while in Florida, according to a person with knowledge of the matter who was not authorized to speak publicly. Genius Sports, which monitors sports betting data for the league, has alerted the NFL that a player may be behind those bets. The NFL investigation revealed that Ridley’s bets included a bet on the Falcons to win.

Shortly after the NFL announced the suspension, Ridley wrote on Twitter: “I bet 1500 in total that I don’t have a gambling problem”, later adding that he could not watch football at the time.

He then posted: “I know I was wrong But I get 1 year lol.”

Ridley’s agent, Ben Setas, did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Monday.

Ridley announced on October 31, 2021 that he would be stepping down from the team due to a mental health issue.

“The last few weeks have been very difficult and although I would love to be on the pitch competing with my teammates, I have to step away from football at this time and focus on my mental well-being,” Ridley said in a statement. statement posted on his social media accounts. “It will help me be the best version of myself now and in the future.

A four-year NFL veteran, Ridley had his best season in 2020 when he caught 90 passes for 1,374 yards. Last season he only played five games. The team exercised its fifth-year option for the 2022 season last spring.

the Falcons said in a statement that they learned for the first time on the league’s investigation on February 9, and that they “support the league’s findings and actions.”

Ridley can appeal his suspension within three days and ask to be reinstated on or after February 15, 2023.

Ridley’s suspension is the first sports-playing sanction the NFL has imposed on a player since 2019, when he suspended Arizona Cardinals defensive back Josh Shaw for the remainder of the season. Shaw, who was on the reserved injured list at the time, was suspended for the remainder of the 2019 season as well as the 2020 season. He has not played in the NFL since.

Prior to Shaw’s suspension, the NFL had not penalized a player for playing games in more than two decades.

The most well-known penalties for sports gambling offenses in the NFL came in 1963 when Pete Rozelle, who was then the commissioner, suspended Green Bay Packers running back Paul Hornung and Detroit Lions defensive end Alex Karras for the entire season to bet on football matches.

In 1946, the day before the NFL championship game between the Chicago Bears and the Giants, league commissioner Bert Bell was told by the Manhattan assistant district attorney that Giants quarterback Frank Filchock and running back Merle Hapes had been offered $2,500 to start the game.

Bell said police discovered the players had not taken any bribes and so allowed Filchock – who denied being approached by players – to play. Bell suspended Hapes, who admitted being asked to pitch the game but did not report it to the league. Filchock later admitted to lying to Bell and he was suspended indefinitely. After Filchock played several seasons in Canada, Bell reinstated him in 1950 and he played in one game that year with the Baltimore Colts.

Since 2018, when the Supreme Court struck down a 1992 federal law which had limited sports betting primarily in Nevada, the thick walls that had long separated the NFL from the gaming industry crumbled. After decades of sports betting against each other, the league has now signed major sponsorship deals with casinos, the Raiders are playing their home games in Las Vegas, and the draft will be held there in April — and the Super Bowl in 2024.

TV broadcasts of NFL games last season were covered in advertisements sports books trying to attract new customers.

In April 2021, the NFL hired Genius Sports to provide “comprehensive integrity services to monitor bets” on all NFL games, and to provide “educational programs to ensure the maintenance of high standards of integrity of the NFL”.

The league provides training to more than 17,000 NFL personnel, including game day workers and stadium employees. The basic message is not to bet on NFL games or pass on inside information about games. Players are however allowed to bet on other sports.
