On Saturday, the union made its biggest set of moves yet in those negotiations, with its offer arriving the day spring training games were originally scheduled to begin. The union dramatically scaled back its demands for expanded salary arbitration eligibility and changes to the revenue-sharing system, and made changes to the league’s direction on the luxury tax.

But MLB, which has insisted that salary arbitration and revenue sharing are third-rail matters, and therefore any changes to these are not concessions, said the union was not did not go far enough in this proposal. And when the league’s negotiating team conveyed that sentiment, the players were furious and considered walking away from the talks.

They did not, and the union’s bargaining team remained in Jupiter until Monday. sides met everyday to the unused spring training home of the St. Louis Cardinals and Miami Marlins in hopes of progressing. Neither spring training nor his exhibition games started on time, and now the start of the regular season is in jeopardy.

MLB chose Monday as the deadline because it thought a minimum spring training length of four weeks — two weeks less than normal — made sense to avoid. a spike in injuries like the one that preceded the pandemic-shortened 60-game 2020 regular season.

There is no obligation to start canceling matches after Monday. The 32-day lockout in 1999, for example, cut spring training in half, but the full season was played, starting just a week later than usual. If the 2022 games are canceled, the union would have to ask for the games to be postponed or demand payment and time on duty for the games lost under a new agreement.

To offset MLB’s threat of a delay, the players had previously issued their own threat during those labor negotiations: They told the league they were reluctant to grant club owners expanded playoffs — of a worth an estimated $100 million a year – if games and money were taken from them. .

Among the big points that remained unresolved on Monday: they remained separated on the league’s minimum salary ($640,000 versus $775,000), a bonus pool for top players not yet eligible for salary arbitration ($20 million for 30 players compared to $115 million for 150 players), the expansion of salary arbitration (22% of players with between two and three years of service compared to 35%) and tax and revenue sharing systems on luxury.

As they have done in previous labor talks ahead of a deadline, the sides could work late into the night and the next morning on a new deal if Monday’s talks prove successful. Or if they can’t make enough progress, they could call off the talks for now and resume them later this week. After nearly a year of talking about a new ABC, however, the season and its money are on the line now.
