The Florida State Senate on Tuesday passed a bill that would limit teaching about sexual orientation and gender identity in public schools from kindergarten through third grade. He now goes to the governor’s office. Ron DeSantiswho should sign it into law.

Critics of the legislation have taken to calling it Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” bill, arguing that it involves a dangerous ban on even saying the word “gay” in classrooms. But while many major news outlets have accurately described the bill and its contents, far too many have adopted that label for the legislation in their headlines.

“‘Don’t Say Gay’ Bill Goes to Florida, Goes to Governor,” read one headline in the Associated press. “Florida Lawmakers Pass ‘Don’t Say Gay’ Bill,” read one headline. Axios. “‘Don’t Say Gay’ Bill Passes Florida Senate,” reads one headline ABC News.

Many other outlets have do the same. Here is the AP alert for their story:

Of course, it’s not the “Don’t Say Gay” bill. As noted in the body of most of these reports, “Don’t say gay” is the label given to the bill by its detractors. So why do outlets like the Associated Press adopt this label themselves in so-called objective headlines?

As supporters of the bill pointed out, “don’t say gay” is not mentioned in the bill.

the invoice states that “classroom instruction by school personnel or third parties about sexual orientation or gender identity may not occur from kindergarten through grade 3 or in a manner that is not not appropriate for the age or development of students in accordance with state standards.”

Reviews make a point that the language of the legislation is vague and poses a challenge to the First Amendment – that does not exempt news organizations from reporting its content objectively.

National examit’s David Harsanyi made this great point:

If the Republicans had decided to call the Democrats’ recent abortion invoice – at the request, until the coronation, paid for by the taxpayers – the “Let’s Kill Babies” bill (although quite specific, in fact), no major news agency would have allowed those words to slip through in their reports, let alone use them in a headline. If the liberals want to use hyperbole, that’s their business, but how can we trust a media that shamelessly regurgitates their propaganda? (That’s rhetorical.)

News headlines, and news in general, that parrot partisan talking points is not journalism. Yet that’s what too many journalists have done with regard to this Florida legislation.
