This is no joke: a vegan walks into a hotel room…. and there’s a moose head above the bar and a leather chair in the lobby.

The bed has a leather headboard and woolen throw, and the in-room menu and mini-bar are a minefield of animal body parts and their bodily fluids.

Now, animal lovers can literally rest in two newly created vegan rooms at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group’s Emirates Palace, Abu Dhabi. Starting this month, beds are fully outfitted with vegan linens, with no feather pillows or duvets; there is no leather, wool or silk used in the piece, anywhere.

In the bathroom, vegan toiletries await you; and a vegan minibar — much of the wine and beer making involves egg or fish products — and a vegan in-room menu all add up to a cruelty-free stay.

“We are seeing a noticeable increase in the popularity of veganism,” Emirates Palace chief executive Michael Koth told The Post. “Supermarkets are well stocked with plant-based products, international airlines are offering vegan meal options and even luxury car brands are launching leather-free interiors. Veganism is pervasive in our daily lives and continues to drive societal change. So why not offer a vegan experience in a luxury hotel?

A bonus of the vegan room offering, he said, “is the suitability for hyperallergenic guests and their very particular health requirements.

“The biggest learning curve for us is the level of detail in considering and orchestrating the vegan guest’s journey,” he added.

For vegan travelers, it’s a welcome change to put on, but not shut up.

“I have a level of acceptance when I travel, but I use that to accelerate my own activism,” said Lizz Truitt, director of marketing and communications for Woodstock Farm Sanctuary in High Falls, NY, which opened Gray Barn, a vegan hostel, in April 2019.

“Interest is very high,” Truitt said of guest bookings. “We are usually around 70% occupancy each month and the profits fund our animal rescue work. A stay here is an act of giving.”

Vegans and carnivores are welcome, but she added, “Grey Barn guests follow vegan rules whether they are vegan or not”.

In 2019, England’s Hilton London Bankside opened its first vegan suite with soft bamboo rugs on bamboo flooring, feather-free bedding, an in-room vegan menu and a hand-embroidered headboard covered in Leather-like Piñatex, made from pineapple fiber. . In the bathroom, Prija, a luxurious line of vegan aromatherapy toiletries, keeps guests feeling pampered.

Everything, even household cleaning products, is vegan.

“I met a client in Washington DC who is passionate about plant-based living. He asked, ‘Why not create a vegan bedroom?’ “, said James Clarke, general manager of the hotel. “We want to include all the choices of our customers, so we have partnered with the Vegan Society in the UK, I have learned a lot about what this choice of life involves. That was three years ago and the room has gone from strength to strength.

So why hasn’t the hotel added more vegan rooms?

“Sir. The pandemic has come and stopped us,” Clarke said. “We’re just getting by now. When global travel resumes, I have no doubt we’ll do more.

Alex Ferri, CEO and Founder of PalmaÏa – The House of AÏA, a sustainability-focused resort on Mexico’s Riviera Maya, believes the pandemic has prompted many people to change their lifestyles.

“Sustainability and health are becoming a big driver for travelers opting for a plant-based vacation,” Ferri said. “All our rooms are plant-based, and we have furnished them without feathers or leather. We don’t call them vegan, but rather sustainable. Most people who book don’t realize the venue is cruelty-free.

But he adds that there are gray areas when it comes to creating an all-vegan hotel.

Ferri is keen to support local Mayan beekeepers, but overall he sees veganism or even veganism as the sensible way forward: “For humans, non-humans and the planet, it makes sense.”
