I write in response to the letter from another world from Reverend Peter Kakos on March 1 (“When Will They Ever Learn?”), in which he blames the United States for the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The premise and logic are not worth addressing directly. My concern is that he is emblematic of an all-too-common short-sightedness that sees only America’s flaws, ignoring its ideals, which are in stark relief for much of the world.
The United States is a wonderful experiment in self-government and for this reason we should always have the highest expectations of them striving. We make a lot of mistakes, but we retain the ability to course correct and we do. Our country will not always realize its ideals, and it is right and natural to lament its shortcomings. And in this country, we have the means to fix them.
Make no mistake, if the story arc bends toward justice, the United States is one of the forces in the world to bend it that way.
