Brent Renaud, who with his brother Craig formed a Peabody Award-winning documentary team that brought attention to human suffering, often working with major news outlets like the New York Times, was gunned down in Irpin on Sunday, a suburb of Kyiv. He was 50 years old.

A Ukrainian news agency noted Mr. Renaud had been shot by Russian troops.

His death was confirmed by Craig Renaud, who was not with him in Ukraine at the time.

He said Brent worked for MSNBC and Time magazine’s television and film division on a segment of a multi-part series about refugees around the world called “Tipping Point.”

Migration in desperate circumstances was a recurring subject for Brent, who along with Craig also made documentaries about Haitians deported of the United States and children leak poverty and danger in Central America.

His wider interest was in using dramatic storytelling, the study of political and journalistic approaches to dealing with angst in its most dramatic forms – war, drug addiction, gang violence, roaming and environmental calamity.

Him and Craig won their Peabody for “Last Chance High”, which tells the story of a Chicago school whose students suffer from emotional turmoil and have been expelled from other public schools in the city.

Over time, Brent had acquired expertise in safely reporting dangerous situations.

In one interview 2013 with Filmmaker magazine, he described risking his life for his work – being repeatedly attacked by thugs while reporting on a crackdown on the Muslim Brotherhood in Cairo, for example, and being set on fire by soldiers in Cambodia when the car he was driving in passed through a military checkpoint.

“It is important when covering conflict to understand the politics and the actors involved,” he said. “You need to know where it’s relatively safe to be, and when.”

Brent Anthony Renaud was born October 13, 1971 in Memphis and grew up in Little Rock, Ark. Her father, Louis, was a salesman and her mother, Georgann Freasier, was a social worker.

In addition to his brother, Brent’s survivors include his parents.

A full obituary will be published shortly..
