Have you ever wished you could put a pause on your current life decisions to explore a different option? The Norwegian film “The Worst Person in the World” takes this question literally in one scene.

Julie (Renate Reinsve), 30, is in a relationship with an older man, Aksel (Anders Danielsen’s Lie). But she recently met Eivind (Herbert Nordrum) at a party and was smitten by him. To think about what things might be like with Eivind, Julie — and the movie — stop time so she can walk across town and see him. As she walks around Oslo, everyone but the future lovers are frozen.

Discussing the sequence, the film’s director, Joachim Trier, said he didn’t want it to look supernatural.

“It’s not about, oh my God, she discovered a time machine,” he said. “It’s more of a kind of romantic musical sequence that plays with the idea of what it feels like to be in love as if time has stood still.”

Rather than relying heavily on digital effects to make the moment work, Trier and his team brought in extras to stand still around Oslo. This involved temporarily stopping traffic and sometimes only having brief moments to allow everyone to get into position and capture the shot.

Trier said that people from Oslo always came to him complaining about the time he had blocked at busy intersections for his filming.

“But it became a popular movie in Norway,” he said, “so I hope people will forgive me.”
