It’s a day that ends in “y”, so of course the former president donald trump complains that he really won the 2020 election and the only reason he’s not president yet is because all those horrible bad guys stole it from him. On Sunday, he once again focused his anger on the former vice president Mike Pence for refusing to help her get it back.
Stripped of his Twitter megaphone after the collective world of social media recoiled in horror at the violence of the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol, Trump posted his comment in his spokeswoman’s tweets. Liz Harington and emailed to reporters with the header “Statement by Donald J. Trump, 45th President of the United States of America.”

The text reads as follows:
If the Vice President (Mike Pence) had “absolutely no right” to alter the results of the presidential election in the Senate, despite fraud and numerous other irregularities, how come Democrats and Republicans RINO, like Wacky Susan Collins, are desperately trying to pass legislation that won’t allow the vice president to alter the election results? In fact, what they’re saying is that Mike Pence had the right to change the result, and now they want to take it down right away. Unfortunately, he did not exercise this power, he could have overturned the election!
That’s for sure, far from the first time Trump has attacked his own former vice president for refusing to ignore the Constitution and federal law to reject validly cast and certified votes in states that went to Joe Biden.
Just days ago, during an appearance on Fox News, Pence admitted that he and Trump hadn’t spoken since last summer.
The Voter Count Act of 1887 was cited in memos written by Trump advisers after he lost the 2020 election, saying Pence could summarily reject certified voters lists from states that voted for Biden, then either recognize “alternative lists” of voters among those states, or simply refuse to include those states in the overall Electoral College tally, and thus give Trump a majority.
This law is presumably the subject of Trump’s complaint in his latest “statement”, and despite Trump’s protestations to the contrary, it does not in fact grant any powers that would have allowed Pence to have “change”. .[d] the result” or “overturned the election! as Trump claims. Efforts are underway to revise the federal law so that it is even clearer and affirmatively states that this kind of nonsense is not allowed.
Former Pence Homeland Security Advisor Olivia Troye was scathing in her reaction to Trump’s latest attack on her former boss, noting that Trump was “bragging” that the “goal was to overturn the election ‘just a day later’.boasting at his rally that he will forgive the January 6 insurgentsand saying GOP candidates should “state publicly” whether or not they agree with Trump.
Trump bragging in his latest statement that the goal was to void the election – after boasting at his rally that he would pardon the January 6 insurgents. Every Republican candidate and official should record their answer: Do you support sedition and pardon domestic terrorists?

UPDATE: This tweet from George Conway was just too good not to include. The Voter Count Act as it currently stands, along with the Twelfth Amendment, Conway wrote, “already make it quite clear that the vice president simply opens the envelopes.”
“But sometimes we want to make the laws even clearer so that even semi-literate psychopaths have a chance to understand them.”
The answer is this: The Twelfth Amendment and the Voter Count Act of 1887 already make it clear that the vice president simply opens the envelopes. But sometimes we want to make the laws even clearer so that even semi-literate psychopaths have a chance to understand them. https://t.co/MZojqccN5G
