Tom Brady isn’t ready to announce what’s in store for him after 22 NFL seasons and seven Super Bowl rings. In his first public comments since ESPN announced he would be retiring, Brady said Monday night that he was “still making a decision about his future.”

“Sometimes it takes a while to really assess how you feel and what you want to do,” Brady said on his “Let’s Go!” podcast on Sirius XM Radio with Jim Gray. “When the time is right, I’ll be ready to make a decision, one way or another.”

Brady, the 44-year-old quarterback, said he was trying to enjoy a “good weekend” when ESPN released its report on Saturday afternoon, which cited multiple unnamed sources. In the hours that followed, relatives of Brady attempted to press pause on news cycle, though they refrained from saying that it wasn’t the end of his career — just that Brady hadn’t made up his mind yet. Brady took the same approach on his show Monday, saying he’s been going “day by day” since the Tampa Bay Buccaneers lost to the Los Angeles Rams in the NFC’s Divisional Round of the Playoffs. last week.

“There is a lot of interest in knowing when I will stop playing. I understand that, and it’s not that I don’t acknowledge it,” Brady said. “It’s just when I know I will know, and when I don’t know, I don’t know, and I’m not going to rush to a conclusion about it.”

Brady said he was “disappointed” that the retirement report interrupted the conference championship weekend and took some of the attention away from the four teams vying for a Super Bowl bid. The implication in his words: if he plans to retire, he would not have announced it yet. The only timeframe he gave to make a decision was “when the time is right”.

Deciding when to leave is tough for any player, especially one who won a Super Bowl last year and this season led the league in passing yards (5,316), completions (485) and touchdowns. (43). When Brady signed with the Buccaneers in 2020, after winning six championships in his 20 seasons with the New England Patriots, he joined a ready-made roster with a strong offensive line, top players and a solid defense. The team was able to keep its starting lineup intact after last season’s Super Bowl victory, but more turnover could be coming this offseason with a long list of players ready to become free agents, including receiver Chris Godwin and tight end Rob Gronkowski.

Brady said on last week’s episode of the podcast that his three children and his wife, Gisele Bündchen, deserved more of his time and would make a decision on what to do next as a family.

Almost as difficult as the decision itself is knowing how to announce it. It’s fair to assume that Brady, who has spent his career controlling everything he can control between the white lines, would like to dictate how news of his retirement is released.

Asked by Gray if Saturday’s false start might tip the scales toward his return for another season, Brady responded by saying he was mostly motivated “from within.” Brady has previously said he wouldn’t want a farewell tour, calling it “distracting”, but it would be hard to avoid if he returns in 2022.

“I understand my decision affects a lot of people’s lives,” Brady said. “So when that decision comes, it will come.”
