US special forces staged a nighttime raid in northwestern Syria on Thursday that resulted in the death of Islamic State leader Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi. The world is now a little better and the lessons of the successful operation are worth telling.
Administration officials briefing the press said Hajji Abdullah, as al-Qurayshi was known, detonated a suicide bomb and killed members of his own family as US troops approached. Its predecessor ISIS similarly committed suicide in 2019 rather than being captured, so the American story is plausible.
