And the winner is… Film Actors Guild?
After a few turbulent months which saw the golden globes Reduced to live tweets and the Critics Choice Awards postponed until March, the Screen Actors Guild Awards found themselves on Sunday in the unusual (and influential) position of being the premiere TV show of this Oscar season.
In a diffuse year where many acting awards still feel up for grabs, this could be welcome news for Sunday’s high-profile winners, which included Troy KotsurNamed Outstanding Supporting Actor for “CODA,” Ariana DeBoseBest Supporting Actress for “West Side Story” and Lead Role winners Will Smith (“King Richard”) and Jessica Chastain (“The eyes of Tammy Faye”).
Many of these winners were defeated by recognition from their guild. “I’ve been a member since 2001, and now I feel like part of the family,” said Kotsur, who recalls nights sleeping in his car and dressing room.
Smith, considered an Oscar favorite, began to tear up when the show aired a clip from “King Richard,” in which he plays the father of tennis superstars Venus and Serena Williams. “It was perhaps one of the greatest moments of my career right now,” Smith said, “because my name was called for ‘King Richard’ sitting next to Venus Williams.”
(On the TV side, “Succession” and “Ted Lasso” took home cast honors, while “Squid Game’s” Lee Jung-jae and HoYeon Jung took home lead performer honors.)
Although the SAG Awards are considered among the most important precursors to the Oscars, recent winners have sometimes diverged from previous ones. The two main actors who took SAG Awards last year – Chadwick Boseman and Viola Davis of ‘Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom’ – lost the Oscar. And among this year’s SAG races, only one category — best actor — matched Oscar’s five-for-five picks. In the supporting categories, the overlap was much thinner, and only two of the five SAG nominees also received Oscar nominations.
Still, the four SAG movie winners are all vying for an Oscar, as is “CODA,” a film about a deaf family and their hearing daughter that’s nominated for best picture. “You are all our peers,” actor Marlee Marlin signed as she accepted the award for best ensemble. “We deaf actors have come a long way.”
