Part of a historic bridge in the Netherlands will be dismantled so that a superyacht built for Amazon founder Jeff Bezos can cross the river that runs through Rotterdam, the city announced on Thursday.

Netty Kros, spokesperson for the city of Rotterdam, said the central part of the 95-year-old Koningshaven Bridge would be removed this summer so the sailing ship could pass. The bridge, known locally as “De Hef”, will then be restored, potentially on the same day, she said.

Mr Bezos’ yacht should be able to pass under all other Rotterdam bridges, Ms Kros said. She did not have an estimate of the cost of deconstruction, but said the shipbuilder, not Rotterdam residents, would pay.

There will be no structural changes to the bridge, Ms Kros said, adding that the city needed to weigh the economic benefits of building the yacht in Rotterdam and the jobs that would result.

Representatives for Amazon and Oceanco, the Dutch bespoke yacht company that is building the boat, did not respond to requests for comment on the yacht’s cost or destination.

Boat International, which publishes articles on the superyacht industry, reported that the The 417-foot sailboat is on its way to becoming the world’s largest sailboat when it is completed later this year, surpassing the Sea Clouda 360ft sailboat built in 1931 and owned by Yacht Portfolio, a Malta-based investment company.

The superyacht ordered by Mr Bezos will likely cost more than $500 million to build, Bloomberg reported. Mr. Bezos is the second richest person in the worldaccording to Tesla CEO Elon Musk.

The bridge, which has a boat clearance of 130 feet, is not currently in use. A Rotterdam tourist guide named Eddy I. said the bridge, designed by Dutch architect Pieter Joosting and a staple of Rotterdam’s skyline, was once used for rail traffic. A vertical lift bridge, it was the first of its kind in the Netherlands and was copied from examples in the United States. The modern industrial aesthetic of the bridge inspired a short film in 1928, he said.

Until now, tall ships have passed below deck before assembling their masts and taller structures, he said.

Siebe Thissen, the author of the book ‘The Boy Who Jumped off the Bridge’, about a working-class man who jumped from the bridge in 1933, said the structure is more than a bridge to the people of Rotterdam. “It’s a monument,” he said. “It’s the identity of Rotterdam.”

When city officials tried to demolish the bridge in the 1990s because it was no longer in use, there were big protests, he said. The bridge is a reminder of the old days in Rotterdam, he said.

“I think that’s why there’s so much fuss about Jeff Bezos and his boat,” he said, before referring to charges against Amazon. “People say, ‘Why this guy?’ It’s a working-class town, and they all know that Jeff Bezos, of course, exploits his workers, so people say, ‘Why should this guy be able to tear down his boat deck?’

The guide, who works for the company Tours by Locals, which connects tourists with local guides, said he doesn’t really see a problem with the deconstruction of the bridge as long as the people of Rotterdam don’t take responsibility for it. the costs.

“I suspect most Rotterdammers will appreciate the international attention, and many will come to watch,” he said. “On the other hand, it shows the unimaginable wealth that people like Bezos have created for themselves, that nothing can stop them from living their dreams and their hobbies. Worlds apart from those who will watch the ship sail through town.
