Oiled, shirtless Pacific Islander fans seemed destined to be disappointed after Tongan taekwondo and cross-country skier Pita Taufatofua, hero of 2016, ’18 and the Tokyo Games last yearsaid he would not come to the Beijing Games.

But surprised! Who was due to appear at the Parade of Nations on Friday, but another shirtless athlete in native attire, Nathan Crumpton, who carried the flag of American Samoa, which is a US territory.

A man from Princeton, Crumpton ran the 100 meters in Tokyo last year, finishing last in his preliminary heat. For these Games, Crumpton will compete in skeleton, becoming the 140th athlete to compete in summer and winter sports at the Olympics, matching Taufatofua’s feat.

Crumpton trains in Park City, Utah and is also a model and photographer.

Taufatofua caused a stir in Rio de Janeiro when he arrived carrying the Tongan flag in native garb, shirtless and covered in coconut oil, his sculpted torso glistening. He later appeared on the “Today” show, and the hosts enthusiastically re-oiled him.

He tried cross-country skiing in 2018 and returned to taekwondo last year in Tokyo. He never ranked highly, but his good nature, his seriousness and, finally, his chiseled body, won him many fans.

However, he said he would skip the 2022 Games, in part to help with disaster relief in his country, which was hit by a devastating tsunami following a volcanic eruption last month.
