The Broadway musical “Mrs. Doutefeu”, which temporarily closed last month as Omicron beat New York, announced on Friday that it would postpone its reopening until April 14, a month later than planned, to give the theater economy some more time to rebound.

“The good news is that it looks like the virus is calming down, but there are still a lot of unknowns,” said the show’s senior producer, Kevin McCollum. “It was clear that April was a better time to open, given tourism trends and thinking about when families and groups will start to feel comfortable.”

The hiatus has left the show’s cast, crew and musicians out of work (at least at “Doubtfire”), but McCollum said he thinks it’s the best way to try to keep their jobs at home. longer term. And on Friday, he said he had invited the entire cast back and hoped they would.

The musical, adapted from the popular 1993 film, has had a bumpy road: After an out-of-town outing at Seattle’s 5th Avenue Theater, it began Broadway previews on March 9, 2020, just three days before the coronavirus pandemic is not forcing all theaters to close. After a 19 month breakthe show resumed previews last October and opened on December 5 for mixed reviewsjust as Omicron was pushing cases up again.

“If there was an award for the worst timing for a producer, I would take that award,” McCollum said. “My timing was terrible.”

But McCollum said he believed the show would work if given the chance and was committed to trying to save the jobs at his company, many of whom have worked on the show for several years.

“The easiest path would have been to say, ‘OK, we’re done,’ but the show was telling us we weren’t done,” he said. “We just never had sea legs because of Omicron.”

An added bonus to reopening in April: nominators and Tony voters who haven’t seen the show before its January 10 break begins will now have another chance to do so before voting. (This year’s Tony schedule has yet to be announced, but the season is expected to conclude at the end of April, followed by nominations, voting and an awards ceremony.)

“Mrs. Doubtfire” was written by Karey Kirkpatrick, Wayne Kirkpatrick and John O’Farrell, and directed by Jerry Zaks. A second production of the show is scheduled to begin performances in Manchester, Englandin September.

“Mrs. Doubtfire” was the first of three Broadway shows to announce a temporary closure as Omicron’s surge led to dwindling audiences — “To Kill a Mockingbird” closed Jan. 16 and announced it would reopen at a different theater June 1, while “Girl From the North Country” closed Jan. 23 and said it hoped to reopen in the spring. (Six other shows have closed permanently.)

Unions representing actors and musicians did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the “Mrs. Doubtfire” plans. IATSE), said his union, which represents stagehands, has yet to hear from the show and “assumes that production has and still is officially closed. ”
