“Hangmen” was saved from the executioner.

The black comedy, from the British playwright Martin McDonaghwill open on Broadway this spring, two years after the production was canceled by its producer as the coronavirus pandemic forced theaters to close.

The resurrected production, about an English executioner at the time Britain banned capital punishment, will now star Alfie Allen, who played Theon Greyjoy in “Game of Thrones,” as a mysterious visitor to a bar run by the executioner. The Executioner will be played by Tony Award-nominated David Threlfall for ‘The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby’.

The play is now set to begin previews on April 8 and open April 21 at the Golden Theater.

In 2020, “Hangmen,” with a slightly different cast, had completed its 13th preview performance, also at the Golden, and was a week away from opening when Broadway theaters closed.

Eight days into the shutdown, the producers announced they were canceling the production, saying, “We don’t have the economic resources to be able to continue paying theater owners, cast and crew during this time. closed indefinitely.” The show was the first, and one of the few, to make such a move.

“I’m not saying I was wise, but when people said we’d be back in four weeks, I never believed it,” lead producer Robert Fox said this week. “We were always charged rent and all kinds of expenses that we couldn’t afford. I assumed that was the end of ‘Hangmen’ on Broadway.

But the US government breathed new life into the piece: it received a $5.2 million prize. Subsidy for operators of closed sitesand later got an extension for its use of that money through June 30, 2022. Fox said a combination of federal aid and investors returning the money they received from a claim from insurance,” meant we had enough to put the show on, and hopefully I can support him in his early days, if he needs support.

A lot of things had to be rethought: Over the past two years, one of the play’s producers, Elizabeth I. McCann, is dead; several of the play’s lead actors became unavailable for personal or professional reasons; and the whole thing was taken apart. But Fox said he wanted to try again, largely because of his fondness for the work of four-time Tony-nominated McDonagh whose other plays include “The Lieutenant of Inishmore” and whose films include “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing.” , Missouri”. ”

“I’m a huge fan of Martin – I think he’s a true original and a brilliant writer, and it’s the third Martin play I’ll be producing on Broadway,” Fox said. “I don’t think anyone is putting it back on because they think it’s going to make a lot of money, but they think it’s a wonderful Martin play, and I hope people want to see a dark comedy and mysterious and fun.”

“Hanged” started life in London, at the Royal Court Theaterthen, after a West End run, had an Off Broadway production at the Atlantic Theater Company, where New York Times critic Ben Brantley called it “criminally pleasurable.” Matthew Dunster has directed each production and will do so again on Broadway; the Broadway production will star Tracie Bennett (“End of the Rainbow”) as the executioner’s wife.
