“I love you sweetheart. I will never forget you.” For years I have been puzzled by my grandfather’s last words to my grandmother. He wasn’t a religious man, and he was the one dying. Was he confused? Delusional? Eventually I stopped wondering, stopped trying to apply logic. After all, contemplating the mystery and simplicity of his words has comforted me ever since, as I’m sure it comforted my grandmother before she passed away. Maybe it was his way of saying that their love would last, that their bond was so strong that it didn’t matter who left, who stayed. — Kathryn Silver Hajo

We met at a bizarre Lunar New Year banquet in Manhattan’s Chinatown, about a month before the coronavirus tore through New York City. I had just moved to town to start my career; Rachel had already been here for 10 years. Just a few months after sharing dumplings and presentations, we were housed together in a 500 square foot apartment. Although we yearn for festivities with parades and banquets, Rachel and I will usher in this Lunar New Year by cleaning our house and recreating the dishes we ate growing up, grateful to have found each other. Here’s to hope and unexpected beginnings. — Calla Zhou

In 1980, lured by more shifts and a 25-cent-an-hour raise, I became a security guard at Roosevelt Field mall on Long Island. My new job led me to spot a pretty saleswoman when I should have been watching the covered passage door. This led to a date, a marriage and two wonderful children. The department store where I was stationed is gone and the mall has been renovated, but somehow the terrazzo where I first saw my wife remains unchanged. When I revisit this place, I think how much poorer my life would have been if I had been richer. — Brian Brady

Nothing makes you want to be mothered as much as becoming a mother yourself. I felt like a scared child, completely lost, responsible for nurturing a life while feeling totally unqualified to do so. But my mom filled my freezer with pans, held my baby so I could rest, made me a bath when I got home. When I cried without knowing why, she held me. She showed me how, just like she showed me my whole life. She gave me everything I needed so I could do the same for my son. — Maureen Goss
