How much viewing time do you have this weekend?

When to watch: Season 2 arrives on Friday, the Discovery+.

If in the midst of the Great Resignation, one of your “maybe one day” ideas is to open a fancy boutique motel, try this abridged series about people who did just that. (Netflix’s “Motel Makeover” is more bingeable but more irritating.) Episodes are about nine minutes long and cover what seems like a wide range of people and places. But watching more than three in a row fills us with creeping dread about the ubiquity of Instagram-flavored monoculture, a Scandi-Brooklyn aesthetic similarity that stretches from shore to shore. One at a time, though, and it’s a solid, fast visualization.

‘Phat Tuesdays’
When to watch: Coming Friday, the Amazon.

This three-part documentary traces the rise of Phat Tuesdays at the Comedy Store, a weekly show founded by Guy Torry (who is also a producer on this series) that helped establish a new era and a new community of black stand-up comedy in Los Angeles. Angels. Often, non-fiction about comedy, especially stand-up, lists the angsty, serious people, and while “Phat” isn’t shy about heavy ideas and real-life conflict – personal and societal – it’s also funny. Terrific editing weaves punch lines from various talking head interviews, and some of the show’s best moments are when you can hear the off-camera interviewers crack up.

When to watch: Now on netflix.

Usually, shows about networks of loosely connected people whose paths cross in ways that the audience, but not the characters, can perceive are tense thrillers. Not so here. This Turkish series (in Turkish, with subtitles or dubbed) is a beautiful, grounded drama that focuses on Meryem (Oyku Karayel) as she begins therapy to deal with her blackouts. She lives with her unstable brother and ailing sister-in-law, relies heavily on the wisdom of a religious elder in her community, and is perhaps a little too enthusiastic about baking for the man whose she cleans the house. Sublimation and indirect communication reign, but “Ethos” feels more romance than torture. If you like “Shtisel”, watch this.
