When Black Lives Matter or other liberal protest groups block a road for an evening, calls for violence abound. Right-wing lawmakers are hastily passing laws that would make legal to crush Conservative protesters and pundits are flooding the airwaves and social media to denounce the unspeakable horror of shutting down traffic for a few hours.

But now that a very vocal but ultimately small group of white people in Canada have disrupted the movement of goods and people for weeks, their tone is, as one might expect, different. Black people and their allies protesting police brutality are an affront to the American project. But fighting for freedom from contracting an infectious disease and give it to your neighbour? It’s called freedom, baby.

It’s no coincidence that BLM protests — large and diverse in nature — are treated differently than a small minority of white people protesting public health measures. The protests, which have altered significant swaths of the daily lives of Canadians, give American conservatives a taste of what they’ve been dreaming of for so long: white minority rule.

Conservative news media and other supporters of Canadian truckers have made a point of prioritizing the feelings and desires of a perpetually aggrieved white minority who believe their so-called freedoms are more important than health and the livelihood of the majority of Canadians.

At the end of January, hundreds of truckers gathered in Ottawa to protest COVID-19 health measures such as mask and vaccine mandates. Although many restrictions were enacted by provincial governments, protesters parked their trucks in the nation’s capital and demanded an end to the restrictions. Demonstrations have escalated, with protesters pouring into residential areas, blocking border crossings between the United States and Canada and generally posing a huge nuisance.

Today, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau invoked the Emergencies Act to allow his government to ban travel and public gatherings, and cut off the flow of money to protesters.

This extreme move provided American trucker supporters with new talking points. Fox News’ Tucker Carlson lamented that Trudeau had turned his country into a dictatorship. In his story, a government has just crushed a workers’ revolt. I guess it’s a lot easier to pretend you’re not clamoring to turn the United States into a racist ethno-state if you can cover it up with the magic words.

US conservative pundits are dead wrong about what kind of protests these are. Far from being a working-class revolt, these truckers have secured millions of dollars from wealthy donors outside the United States and Canada, according to data leak from crowdfunding platform GiveSendGo. And they are not a representative group: 90% of Canadian truckers are vaccinatedand unions and industrial groups representing the truckers strongly condemned the protests.

The general Canadian public also has high vaccination rates, with over 80% of the population fully vaccinated. But if you watch Fox News, as millions do, you might think Canada is overrun with unvaccinated people and protesters are fighting valiantly instead of throwing a tantrum.

Perhaps the best illustration of the absurdity of fighting for your right to spread a deadly disease was captured on the American side of the border. As part of its breathless coverage of the so-called protest, Fox News tapped Jonathan Turley, the channel’s legal analyst and George Washington University law professor.

“By that reasoning, they could have suppressed the civil rights movement,” said Turley, blissfully unaware of American history. “They could have arrested Martin Luther King.” Could have? Perhaps he thinks King’s famous missive was called “Birmingham Vacation Letter”?

But living in an alternate reality where Canadian anti-vax truckers have it worse than civil rights protesters who have been regularly assaulted and imprisoned is a requirement for creating the dystopian nightmare they wish to subject us to.

As further proof that the Conservatives will cling to anything that advances their cause, let’s check out their crusade for “law and order.”

If we were to take their proclamations at face value, a dozen truckers blocking border crossings to and from one of our largest trading partners seems cause for concern. But anyone who has watched the conservative movement over the past 50 years knows that law and order is only for black people.

And remember when everyone blamed Joe Biden for the supply chain issues that have plagued the world since the pandemic began? For a week, truckers blocked important border crossings, hampering the movement of goods and people. Automobile factories on both sides of the border have had to operate at reduced capacity because they could not receive the parts needed to manufacture cars.

Seems like the supply chain issues weren’t that much of a concern after all, just a way to score cheap political points.

During the 2020 summer of racial justice protests, right-wing pundits denounced the very tactics of Canadian ‘protesters’ now use. Several months later, when thousands of Trump supporters stormed the US Capitol in hopes of overturning a legitimate election, the same people had plenty of excuses.

Like the truckers, the insurgencies were very much in the minority. While most Republicans mistakenly believe the 2020 election was stolen, they’re still just playing catch-up 30% of voters, according to a 2021 Monmouth poll. And Biden received 81 million votes against 74 million for Donald Trump. Yet there they were, ransacking the Capitol, demanding freedom from the oppression of the will of the majority.

After those in power fled inciting the insurrection, a similar truck blockade on this side of the border doesn’t seem so far-fetched.

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) lent his support to the truckers by calling for an American “freedom convoy” that would take over cities like Los Angeles and Washington, D.C. “Civil disobedience is an age-old tradition in our country, from slavery to civil rights, you name it, ” said the senator. “Protesting peacefully, cluttering things up, making people think about mandates.”

His wish can come true. But at what cost ? Although there have been rumors on social media about a copycat convoy intended to arrive in Washington on March 1there is nothing concrete yet.

Right-wing pundits and Republican politicians would love nothing more than the ability to cripple cities. They have spent the past two years openly fantasizing about how to turn our half-broken democracy into a truly authoritarian state. There is no doubt that in a country like ours, where there are more guns than adults, a convoy full of racist crazies would have more support than in Canada.

The goal has always been to put white Christian men in power while the rest of us languish in the margins. Their wholehearted support for the Canadian trucking convoy is another reminder that they will do anything and support anyone in pursuit of their goal of white minority rule. Even burn it all down.
