The day’s events, which were meant to be about unity, only served to highlight Republicans’ continuing division over Mr Trump’s bid to nullify the 2020 election, as their leaders attempt to move forward and draw attention to what they call the Biden failures. administration. More than a year later, the party is still struggling with how much criticism and dissent it will tolerate.

“Shame falls on a party that would censor people of conscience, who seek truth in the face of vitriol,” said Sen. Mitt Romney, Republican of Utah, wrote on Twitter. “Honor attaches to Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger for pursuing the truth, even though it comes at a high personal cost.”

He did not mention that the party president who chaired the meeting and orchestrated the no-confidence resolution, Ms. McDaniel, is his niece.

The censorship has also been condemned by Sen. Bill Cassidy, Republican of Louisiana, who, like Mr. Romney, voted to impeach Mr. Trump for inciting the insurrection on January 6, and Governor Larry Hogan of Maryland, also republican, who called friday “a sad day for my party – and the country.”

Republican National Committee members defended the measure, describing people who were interviewed by the Jan. 6 committee as casualties in a broader Democratic effort to stay focused on the attack on the Capitol.

“Nominal Republicans on the committee offer a pastiche of bipartisanship, but no real protection or due process for ordinary people who have been targeted and terrorized by the committee,” said Richard Porter, a member of the Republican National Committee of Illinois. “The inquiry is a de facto Democrat-only inquiry, increasingly detached from congressional norms.”

The Jan. 6 committee, which has seven Democratic members, interviewed more than 475 witnesses, the vast majority of whom either volunteered to testify or accepted without a subpoena. It has no prosecuting powers and is responsible for compiling a report and making recommendations to prevent something similar from happening again.
